A guys walks into a .....

pawn shop, looking for a guitar. Seeing nothing interesting, asks about wheat pennies... the owner pours the contents of 3 long bins into a box and says, he'll sell them all for $20. At least $20 worth of 1 cent coins, $20 bucks for the amusement of searching for something rare.

First coin I pulled out was in a paper pouch: 1972 P, Stuft Cent, B.U.

My first 1972 DDO. Yeah... I've got a LOT of other that I'll keep, and pretend they're DDO instead of MD, but.... finally! Just, kinda wish it had come in one of the countless rolls.

Yeah, I didn't want to take it out of the plastic wrap until I learned more about "Stuft" Cent.

"shifted" for sure .. just take it out of the plastic and take some pics again.

 

Ah-ha! So, next time I see one of these tiny envelopes I'll have some idea of what may be inside, e.g. a "Shifted" strike perhaps.

What the heck is "Struft"???

If you look carefully, the word is “Sluft”. The “L” is clearly lower case and the end “t”, as well as the end “t” of “cent”, are both carefully crossed at the top.

What I was able to find was a Text from Wikisource alluding the word from German…a “ Teut. root word ‘slup’…” meaning: ‘to slip’. (Sorry, best I could find.)

I think the word was used to indicate the lettering had “slipped”…an obvious reference to the doubling.

Those spots tend to hurt the eye appeal, maybe a grade. We would Love to see some full cropped obv and rev photos when you cut it open.
