Thoughts on this coin?

I wrote the seller asking if it'd been cleaned. He admitted "surfaces were unnatural". Stay away, yes?

What the heck happened to this coin?

Stay away from it!! If the surfaces are unnatural then stay away from it! A statement like that can be construed to mean almost anything!!

 

Yes - it has been cleaned, but I am not sure how. Does not look like polish, but something mild corrosive was used - or at least that is what it looks like to me.

 

The color is unnatural - it's been cleaned.

 

Looks like it's been painted with gold model paint.

 

A WAG is a dip perhaps 10 or 15 years ago followed by an oil soaking. The coin has corrosion around the 2:00 area of the obverse which I do not think was caused by the dip but existed before the dip.

The coin has definitely been messed with although not recently.

Again, all guesses.

Besides not being able to do that on eBay it also eliminates buyer protection.

 

What they said. Plus, look at the strange angle the obverse photo was taken at. This is often done to hide problems.

 

It,s obvious it was cleaned with a corrosive agent by looking at it uneven color and
Pitting are really good sign,s!!

 

It's priced as a problem free coin and it's NOT. Why buy it unless it's a particularly rare variety?

 

interesting as a student who wants (hopefully ) to be a lawyer I checked this sellers feedback and one of the "neutrals " literally says this

"Buy from this seller often if you enjoy cleaned coins or returning coins" there you go folks....

 

A big NO here. Those spots look like old corrosion spots that have been cleaned and were never removed. So IMO you have a harshly cleaned coin that is beginning to corrode again.

 

Nothing new to add.... Count me in the "the coin has almost certainly been dipped or otherwise cleaned" camp.

 

I would not purchase this item.

 

Great advice. I am not above buying problem coins, but at a problem coin price, not full price.

 

It looks like it might have been soaked in Olvie Oil or some other acidic cleaner. It looks nothing like those I have and I don't think it would fit well with yours when displayed ? If buying for resale, I would take a pass.

you can pretty much rest assured that Genuine Coins from that period , that are not Certified and encapsulated are almost always victims of " cleaning " .

Nice coin for a filler, way over priced as spots and looks cleaned, I would past on this and not buy, but what do I know just learning, but seeing this coin for someone new like me with out Coin Talk I might buy and learn hard way.:devil:
