Great coins.... I notice you have the South Sea Company shilling.... very nice, I have the one with plumes and roses on the reverse where the 'SSC' is on yours. Beautiful coins you have there.
I do too & the bug eyed obverse ! I think 1818 it changed but not sure still reading up on British coins.
Well, the portrait I have seen of George III on the crowns and half crowns dated after 1817 definitely looks different to me.....less appealing(in my opinion)..... such as on the 1820 crown....I much prefer the portrait on the 1817 shilling of mine....
And in this regard, the following 6 coins should be included for a complete 'type' collection (!!): one dated 1968 - 1981 "New Pence", Machin Portrait (2nd) one dated 1982 - 1984 "Five Pence", Machin portrait (2nd) - only issued in mint sets one dated 1985 - 1990 "Five Pence", Raphael Maklouf Portrait (3rd) - large size one dated 1990 - 1997 "Five Pence", Raphael Maklouf Portrait (3rd) - small size one dated 1998 - 2008 "Five Pence", Ian R Brinkley Portrait (4th) - thistle one dated 2008 - now "Five Pence", Ian R Brinkley Portrait (4th) - part of Royal shield Enjoy!
lol - Bug-eyed! The 1816/17 portrait is termed the Bull Head portrait, used 1816 and 1817. During 1817, someone took offence to the bull-headedness of it all and came up with the modified effigy, used on halfcrowns and crowns until 1820. In that way, halfcrowns dated 1817 come with both types. George IV also had two radically distinct effigies on the 1824 and 1825 shillings respectively - the former more thick-necked, like the earlier George III. He looks quite the dandy-boy in the 1825 version with his curly hair!
:kewl: Even back in 1816 till now u can never please everyone.and 90% of the time it will P/off someone. I am not disagreeing with you! I am stating a fact that I have learned 59 year of living & collecting
jello, True enough! I suspect that even though George III was mad (crazy) at the time, he probably still had something to say about it! btw - you have a very nice 1887 2/6. Most I have seen have non-so-nice toning on them (if Unc or gEF), or are worn. The dragon betwixt the date comes out especially clear! Do you have any other Jubilee coinage, or is that your only one? I only have a toned 1887 2/6 myself ...
Yes Gold Crown and one more 1887 half crown. both grade MS-63 Anacs, but I have then in my safety Deposit bank box
