It's like natural selection... if you are dumb enough to give a complete stranger your home address and let them know you have valuable coins there... then you are just asking to get tied up and robbed... or worse. Survival of the smartest...

That sounds harsh but is true. We have separated ourselves from this natural selection but it will never be totally gone. It's a shame he did that but I bet he'll not do it that way again.

This reminds me of another thread where someone was excoriated for not agreeing to meet an Ebay buyer directly rather than ship to him. It is unfortunate, but regardless of whether the buyer is on Craigslist or Ebay, it's probably not the best idea to have "local pick-up" when it comes to coins if you're doing business out of your home.

Agreed but I think it's ok to meet at say the mall's food court usually. Especially if your using your home as a return address.

It freaked me out when one buyer on ebay wanted to pay with a money order and I had to give him my home address so he could mail it to me. I should have used my work address...

Wasn’t there a previous thread describing some Craig’s list person selling a $20 gold? They would only take cash for the coin & would be glad meet the buyer in a dark alley someplace to trade for the coin.

I've always said if you are going to meet a stranger for a cash transaction to pick a nice safe place......like the local police station.

That point brings up another fact....your shipping address is on Ebay whether the buyer pays via Paypal or check, as is the buyers. Think about it, this could happen just as easily there. A buyer browses Ebay looking for sellers with lots of valuable items for sale. He purchases a token item to get the address of the seller. Then he stops by later that week with a moving truck and a shotgun.

This goes along with a couple B&M robberies in the past year in Sacramento.

I could leave all my money on my kitchen table and go on vacation, if you walk in my house when I am not there, try getting past my 4 German Shepards

not trying to be ignorant, but with a table full of money, a person that is willing to break into your house will have no problem shooting your dog(s). also even if a dog is mean to strangers, its not properly trained to handle that type of situation. i have two pit bulls. one is a trained certified guard dog also she has her canine good citizen award. they are trained to retreat if a gun gets pulled, also they are trained to automatically attack if a target goes for a pocket. that does no good if they come in, gun in hand. german shepards are smart dogs, my second favorite to work with. look into getting your's some training.

    i hate using craigslist!

i was looking to buy a ps3 and they had one up for sale pretty cheap, not to cheap to automatically think its a fraud, but close.i decided to email them just to see what the deal was, to see if it was in a "good" area and how legit they sounded.

the reply back and want to meet in a really bad part of town(projects). they give me the address, i google map it. its an alley!!! i then tell them i am not sure if i can make it. they send me a message saying something like "well if you can pay for a ride out, i can lower the price $20, but let me know i got like 5 other people that have been emailing me all day wanting to meet asap". then they leave me a phone number. i do some magic in the police system and find out its an out of state(north Carolina if i remember correctly) prepaid cell phone registered to "john Smith" with the address of "123 street street". i know that doesn't make it for sure a scam, just because of the phone. i know some people don't want that info out there. but with everything else, i would have been an idiot to meet them.

i never email them back, they send me a message saying, if i want it, to call/Email in 5 minutes or they have to sell it. 30 minutes go by and they say "yea, sorry we had to sell the ps3. but if you can get a ride, we got another one, whenever you can get out here call/email).

i still wonder if they robbed anybody that day. i remember an episode of the "first 48" when a guy got shot and killed. it ended up being a craigslist set up. i have had a few more shady experiences on craigslist. now i only use it if i have no other choice. you put something up for sale and people come out of the woodwork with law ball offers or ridiculous trade offers. i was selling a subwoofer and amp, what am i going to do with 100 hair brushes?!?!

My shepards were all trained by state troopers association, someone breaking in would't have the time to pull a gun, not excluding all my neighbors are cops
