I have searched & googled - seems pretty
Unusual to find slabs, same for
    Central America.
    1) any thoughts why?
    2) any suggestion in where to
    Look? Thanks!

If you check Heritage Auctions "Archived Auctions" under world coins, you'll find there have been thousands of slabbed South American coins sold.

That, I can't help you with. Keep checking back. Some of the world coin guys should be around in the next few days.

Out of curiosity, I checked the NGC Registry to see what sets there might be for some of these countries and there were very few listed. Including the Caribbean, these are the only ones: Cuba, Danish West Indies, Dominican Republic, Peru, Puerto Rico & Mexico.

I was a little bit surprised to learn that only two countries, Mexico & Peru, represented South and Central America. Perhaps this is part of the reason why there are so few slabbed coins from these regions.

NGC has slabbed coins from many South American countries, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala, Panama (although that is technically Central America), Paraguay, Brazil - the list goes on. They never seemed to be that hard to find for me. Coins from the Spanish colonial period and from the periods of independence immediately following that are the most common. Newer stuff is the least common.

So to the OP - if you can tell me specifically what it is you are looking for then I can tell you the best places to contact to get it.

I have been watching this seller over the last few months because they have sold some awesome lots of coins (none of which have I been able to win). They currently have some coins from the 19th century from some of countries you mentioned.

Check the dealers listed here - http://www.cointalk.com/t14152/ - quite a few of them often have coins of the type you want. But you do have to spend some time looking through their inventory.

Sorry about the picture size.... I'm still getting the hang of resizing.

I can recommend Sedwick Coins. http://www.sedwickcoins.com I believe that most of his items are raw but they are quite nice!

I purchased these 3 Central American coins in slabs at the ANA in Boston. They were purchased from three different dealers & all were slabbed by NGC.

The main reason you do not find as many is because world coin collectors do not want slabs for the most part. Slabbing is a peculiar American fascination.

I think it goes beyond a peculiar American fascination. Alot of people want their modern coins to be certified as authentic and graded. Some folks fancy paying more for these 'slabbed' coins than the same grade coin unslabbed, this sounds more like the peculiar American fascination you speak of.
I can go either way on the issue... depending on the coin in question.... I like the fact that I can have some of my modern world coins certified, but wouldn't want them all in slabs by any means. With modern coins, that are fairly uniform from one strike to another, I can see it as a valuable service to some people.

But that is changing. There are now European grading companies and the American TPGs are opening offices all over Europe. In time, slabbing coins will be as prevasive in Europe as it is here.

As for what the collectors want - they are getting tired of the European dealers and auction houses selling harshly cleaned and damaged coins as problem free examples. Especially when they are charging problem free prices for problem coins.

Knowledgeable and astute world collectors have come to know this and they will no longer buy the problem coins. The times they are a changing ;)
