Does anyone plan on buying multiple rolls of this Presidential dollar for investment because of Abe Lincoln?
I'll definitely be picking up a few and holding on to them. Though I will get the bank rolls as opposed to the mint rolls.
Probably not for me, but I have a feeling that the amount of people that show up at at the launch ceremony for this coin will be HUGE!
Oh dear, please tell me you're not going to go out there and buy these rolls for investment purposes. The rumdums bidding on e-bay for this coin (roll) may drive the price up temporarily, but long term? Nunca. If you're gonna pick up a roll or two do it 'cause you like collecting 'em....
My mom gets me D rolls so I talked her into "investing" in a couple rolls for herself. She's what we call "risk averse" so the guarantee not to loose principle (when measured in dollars) was very appealing! Heck, she might buy TWO! She hates them though, can't tell them from quarters. Historical note: She used to carry around her good luck Morgan in her change purse and almost spent it in the 60s as a Half. "I haven't seen one of these in a while." Said the cashier, signaling the mistake to her. PS, it's an '89 cc! As a teen I convinced her to put it in a flip.
IMO, this coin will be a terrible investment since everybody is thinking exactly the same thing: "Ole Abe was a popular President so I'm gonna stick some of these away since nobody else will ever dream of doing so!" On the bright side, I expect MS66 coins to sell at healthy premiums since, from what I've seen, the design is prone to some serious damage. For whatever reason, some of these presidential designs seem to attract "hits" like a magnet while others do not. Washington and Adams are good examples of "hit attractors" while the Jefferson and Monroe's repelled hits.
Have any details been given about the release ceremony? I don't see anything on the Mints website yet.
Even the mint expects there to be a lot of demand for the Lincoln. They cut short the coining of the Buchanan dollar (stopped several weeks before it was even released.) in order to concentrate on coining Lincolns.
The Lincoln is the key to the set, irrespective of the mintage numbers. With Abe on the penny for a century, folks will gravitate to it. Moreover, the mint KNOWS this, so expect to see some oddities. Buy a box, tear the wrappers off every roll, find an error, sell it for a thousand bucks, put the rest into your safe deposit box, free. Barnum or Bailey's grandkids will probably be looking for a few to put aside. I have access to first strike complete boxes. At cost.
