I am making a ring out of a 1964 Silver Kennedy Half Dollar and a ring out of a 2010 penny. I am almost done hammering and will post a few pics of each when they're done...:smile Wish me luck, Coinmaster1
Speaking of spooning, I found it a slow method, so I decided to use a hammer. And if the penny ring doesn't fit anyone, I'll probably just put it in my collection.
Here are the rings. Laugh all that you want! This is my first time. The penny is more of a keychain than a ring! BTW, the last picture is of the scrap metal that I collected from the 2010 Penny and 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar.
Well you got a lot more work to do to make some rings and so you don't totally loose all the value of the coins you destroy making them. LOL. Keep working on it. Check out the engraving forums for ideas and techniques too.
looks like you were hitting the half too hard and caused it to warp. take it SLOW! it may take alot longer, but the end result will turn out better.
The zinc one will disentigrating when the air starts working on it. I think it would be too dangerous to wear as a ring.
Yo charge only 3 easy payments of $19.95 plus $8.95 shipping for the half! If you act now the penny is yours free for $8.95 shipping!
You know, it would be much easier to have one of these ring custom made for you. You can send this guy a coin and he'll send you back a ring. All for about $35. Edited to remove url ~violation rule 3-B
The only way to keep your metal from splitting is to match the density of your hammer closely with that of the material. A blacksmith uses a steel hammer to work steel, and that is precisely why they used spoons. When the practice started, what were spoons made from? Silver! I would use a 2 ounce brass jeweler's hammer for such a job. Brass is only about .5 Rockwell Scale harder than silver and should work great on 90% Ag. Edit: And just my opinion, I'd junk the cent. Zinc is crap. The only reason they don't make cents out of lead is because they'd have to ban them in California. ha ha It does not fight corrosion at all. If you put that cent in vinegar, within a week or two it'd be a black mush. Not suitable for any jewelry, but cheap fun is true.
I was at one time was considering one of the coin coins. But someone mentioned the devices soon wear off of them. So I'm not going that direction any longer.
