Ok toner pro's,,, what do ya think she grades ? toning opinions ? ... and what do you think she's worth ?
Well the O helps me with the light strike on the ear. And I know we use the obverse for a heaver grade then the reverse so take that into consideration. With that into play and the highly reflective picture I'd make a guess that it's a 65. The fields look clean but the toning and picture make it real hard to tell. As for the toning, well I like it. Dont know if it's NT but I'd keep the coin
Thanks Duke... Around two or three months ago I decided to toss $100 at pure "toning" on the 'bay.... I have $10 left, so am probably now left with looking at 50's to 70's cents,, we'll see. Wondering if the toning pro's in the forum think I'm doing well so far, or if I've done poorly.... I really don't know what toning sells well and what toning patterns do not sell well......
Wow that Frankie is bright! I'm surprised it got graded but I'd take it. I bet these would sell well.
if you paid more than melt for that proof frankie you got taken for a ride my friend. OPeace dollars are the biggest toners to come up. Im comissioning 7 of them to go on the bay. youll see them next month, theyre quite pretty and rare.
Wow.. so according to Treashunt and cerdsalicious,,, so far is that I've paid ~$90 for a couple toned coins that are worth $15-$25 ? Geez... toners suck ! ... guess i need to go back to key dates.
That frakie should be $7 or less. And $7 is high. The 84O I would say $35 at most. Toning is good if you can find eye appeal. Problem with the Frankie is that it's a proof not supposed to tone. Problem with the Morgan is that there are so many 84O that they're quite common toned, and this toning is nothing above ordinary. You could do better but don't be discouraged just look at auctions to see what types of toning on certain series bring in the premium. Then get a steal on one.
Since when are proofs not supposed to tone. I've seen plenty of toned proofs Don't listen to em baha, that Frankie is the bomb, It may only be on the sheet for $10-12, but I know people that would line up to pay $40 or more for a nicely toned proof like that. And the coloring on that morgan is quite interesting, imo and should bring $45 nicely white, probably $50-55 with that toning.
They must be rare if they are O peace dollars. Which coin and why? Now lately any coin with a hint of toning goes for more that it is worth - maybe not as much as last year, but toners are not my thing. Nice additions I like the Morgan the best, but then again the older the better to me.
In my experience, most collectors prefer their proof coins untoned, but I don't think that equates to saying that they are not supposed to tone. There are collectors who seek toned proofs as well. Otherwise, I agree. The 1884-O is a common date and the toning on that coin is not spectacular. I would not pay a premium for that coin but that should not preclude someone else from paying one if they really like the toning pattern and color scheme. Regarding what toning patterns drive premiums. I paid over 4X bid for this 1884-O three years ago.
Typing from the iPhone. It automatically corrects for sum reason whenever I type in peace it tries to correct to Opeace not to mention the pocket dials while it's locked, that's the real kicker, has caused problems with my gf quite recently.
Recent proofs shouldn't have toning IMO. Seated lib proofs with toning Im fine with any series after that I avoid toning, it doesn't add to the appeal of the coin. Plus I had 3 toned proof frankies I put up for sale at $10 each. They sat for so long, I sucked up my pride and returned then to my melt bucket. The 63 and 57 untoned proofs I had for $20 and $30 each respectively sold within 30 days. As for the 84O I would have paid 5-6x book. At 4xbook you got a steal, once again lehigh shows us how to dominate the toned market.
if you still have those toned franklin's, and they are certified, please hollar at me.... I'd like to complete a nice set of tone franks now (especially after seeing this one in hand).... My passion has been cents for years, but they are now sky high and I'm thinking aquiring 10 nice tone morgans or 15 nice toned franks vs. 1 nice lincoln cent may be the way to go for awhile.
1st pic is of the rev of the morgan,,,, does the funky reverse toning help ? 2nd pic is of another modern proof that toned,,, but wasn't suppose to and which folks do not prefer vs. blast white.... what do ya'll think - would you prefer blast white or toned blue like this ? 3rd pic is what I'd call my preferred toning.... Lehigh presents a toning pattern that I really don't get into that much (ie - crescent toning). Just me, but I really prefer the blanket toning variety, where most of the surface is covered with color. I'd never pay a premium for the coin Lehigh shows,,, and am glad that my preference is not valued as high,, mo' for me on the cheap-cheap
