I have a question. I have a 1891 coin that is the size of a dime, has a lady on the front, she is in the sitting position in her left hand (to her left) there is a shield that reads LIBERTY and i cant make out what is in her right hand. On the back there is a design and I dont know what the coin is or the value of it. Could anyone help me?
Your description sounds like an 1891 US dime. It is commonly called the seated liberty design. That was the design used before the Barber dime & before the Mercury dime. Today we use the Roosevelt dime. Don't clean it. Post a photograph here & the dime experts can comment further.
you can't see a mint mark on it can you? It sounds like it's in Fair to Almost good condition. Even despite that it's well worth more than it's silver content.
The OP says that the word LIBERTY is on the shield. If all the letters are present, then it is at least fine condition. Of course, there may be any number of letters visible & the OP would still probably state that the word LIBERTY is on the shield.
Just to repeat my earlier post- Don't clean it. Post a photograph here & the dime experts can comment further.
It is on the shield and very visible to the naked eye. Dose anyone know the value of this coin by chance? Or maybe a website i can look at? I cant find it on the web anywhere. I'm pretty new at coin collecting.
The 1891 Seated Liberty dime in P,D or S is fairly common, I'd say you have something in the range of maybe $12 to $20 sight unseen. The better the coins condition though, the more value to a collector. I seen now that you have a "love token" the reverse has been engraved...cool!
Its a Seated Dime made into a Love Token. Do a search on coin Love tokens and it should give you all kinds of information.
That was a dime that some one removed the reverses devices and made it into a love token. The initials are present. (Sorry I can't read them.) But it is done very nicely.
Yeah, love tokens are very interesting, but unfortunately destroys most numismatic value of the coin. As it is unless the engraved design on the reverse is desirable to a love token collector, I would think its only worth a few dollars. Its a shame, since it looks like a very nice dime. Its a little better since it wasn't holed. Maybe a cheap obverse type set filler? This is common, I have a whole bracelet of love token half dimes in XF on the obverse, some of them late bust some early seated liberties. I paid about $15 for ten of them on the bracelet. It is what it is, no changing history. I keep it around to remind myself to take care of my coins for future generations.
Well thank you guys very much for helping me out. I hope I can soon do the same for you. You'll here from me again I'm sure. Thanks, Deanna
It could very well be the initials of the lady, given to her sweet heart to carry with him, or most likely scenario, his initials engraved onto the coin so she may carry it with her. Often worn as a necklace or charm bracelet (held by a bezel) as a "token" of their affection. Very well done by the way, probably by a professional jeweler.
Wow that sounds like a great deal! I think depending on the intricacy of the design the value of a love token dime can go upwards of $15
