I am getting deployed next month..well actually the 15th of September - 18 October in response to the Oil Spill and was wondering if anyone lives around the New Orleans / Houma, LA area (as long as I have time and they dont work me to death) and would like to meet up?

    Thanks

Just think, you will probably miss the first snow in Cleveland. In stead, you will get to survive a hurricane. That will be quite a change. :D :foot-mouth:

Seriously, I assume this means you will still have access to CT, but maybe not as often?

    RLM,
You would think I would be able to get internet access though I cannot say for sure or even how good it is. More importantly I dont even know where I will be staying. Some Coasties are staying in Hotels while others are staying in Barracks..man I am starting to my the comfort of my bed already and I havent even left lol. I am without a doubt bringing my Laptop especially if i get stuck somwhere like Houma. Rumor has it, people who live in Houma go to Walmart for entertainment ..rofl jk :D
You are right, I will either miss the first snow or coming back to it, which will stink royally. :(

Leave the laptop at home, sell some silver TODAY and buy yourself a Blackberry. That way it won't matter where you have to lay your head at night, you can always keep it in your pocket.

I do disaster inspections for FEMA. I was in New Orleans two days after Katrina and the only motel room I could find was in Houma. The first couple of days Houma did not have electricity but at least I had a room. I spent most of my time in New Orleans but I found the people in Houma to be very friendly. There are worse places you could go.

I got the call but I couldn't go because I was out of town at the time. A buddy went and said the destruction was amazing.

If at all possible get housing/hotel in and around the New Orleans area, but N.O. is 90 miles from the trouble, Houma on the other hand is closer to the troubled waters. I once lived in N.O. and have been to Houma numerous times. Friday and Saturday night is party night, dancing, drinking...some country and western and zideco. It's like going to a different country down there, hospitality abounds, along with some good eats...get ready to put on a few pounds.

Bring a camera, there is much history in this area.

I have never been there. Did some training at Ft Gordon and Ft Benning. I just wanted to say, stay safe, stay sober and watch your back. Operations that have guys coming in from different areas and different employers can be places trouble can be found easily enough. Good luck

A little paranoia is not necessairily a bad thing.

Look at the bright side. All that TDY money, pockets full. Motoring around in a cabin cruiser. 4-hours on, with 8-hours off. 3-hots and a cot. Great weather, with fair winds. Your cup is more than full, it's cascading.

Request that you check-in with us every so often and let us know how many tarballs you've added to your collection. Understand they come in a wide range of varieties. Good pickings for the observant.

Have asked for the Menehunes to watch over you. They are known to bring good fortune to believers.

    Godspeed, my brother, Godspeed!!!

While it's true that the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff doesn't cotton to Yankee domesday machines, just don't find yourself on the wrong side of the law while down there...they have a tendency to loose the jail cell keys.

Good luck! Be sure to take a nice circulated Morgan dollar and keep it in your pocket so you can look at it to remind you of the good times...LOL

Thanks guys..been trying to prep our condo for sale and so I havent been on much lately..painting, installing tiles, moving crap to storage..the house looks nice, I just wish we had people coming to look
    at the house.

Hobo, you currently/prior military especiallly using the slang TDY and all the $$ that goes with it. I cant wait, see what it's like. It definitely wont be the same as sleeping in my own bed but I am counting my blessing cause I can still call my wife and kid.

Houma isn't as backwoods as you may think. It's not New York, or even New Orleans, but if you take the time to meet some of the people, you may end up wanting to stay. I'm not in Houma, but close enough to know that you should be looking forward to your deployment. Send me a pm if you need a hand while you're down this way, or just need some ideas of things to do. Also, thank you for your service.

For a deck-ape, sounds as though you have a positive attitude. Good on you!!!

Keep your motto, Semper Paratus, firmly in mind. Home is always where you drop your sea bag. As long as the CG feeds you and keeps a shelter over your head, you will do just fine.

Really looking froward to one of your sit-reps.

    Take good care - - - - - - - - - - -
