Thanks. I'm liking the fact that I can chat with people interested in coins, it's not something I've ever really been able to talk to anyone about cause they could care less. Although it looks like my girlfriend is interested after today. She'd never seen a half dollar before.

Welcome to the best thread on the forums, gf32.

$350 in dimes, got 1 1967 Canadian dime, not sure which it is but sounds nearly identical to my other 80% Canadians. Also got a '42 S Merc and 6 Roosevelt silvers. The oddity was a 5 pesewas from Ghana.

Not sure when, but I just got off the phone with the service manager at my Wachovia branch, and she informed me that as Wells Fargo begins coming in, they are going to begin to charge their customers for coin orders. I'll see if I can find out when. This won't affect me, mostly because I won't be picking up a box until December at the latest. So I'm not sure when this is happening, but be wary.

$300 in halves and another skunk. My beginner's luck has run out.
Thanks to a friendly teller, I have discovered I have some roll searching competition here, which may explain my recent drought.

I want to start doing this. Do you guys find any methods more successful then others when finding 40%-90% silver?

    Welcome gf32 !

I have come to view this CoinTalk site the way I used to view MMORPG's (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game).
There are beginner numismatists and advanced collectors, There are skills to acquire to advance your status. There is booty or loot to be found on unsuspecting victims or backyard sales. If you decide to change your skill tree, no problem because you can focus ancient , old , modern, coins , currency , auctions , roll searching , pocket change , coinstar. You can even learn the art of stealth by hiding your purchases from your loved ones (until you die and they get it all anyway). The one thing that always make a game fun is the continually changing landscape and additional worlds to explore.

I am quite new to this as well (welcome to the forum, by the way!). From what I have been able to figure out, there is no real secret other than persistence (and a little luck). In my own personal experience, I have discovered that rural banks in small towns that do have halves generally have more silver than larger banks in larger towns that have halves. But, that is a very unscientific observation. And, it won't do you much good if you can't get to a rural area easily.

Okay everyone has gotta start searching quarters on here if they can afford boxes of half dollars I found 1 1964 Quarter and 1 1967 Canadian quarter in a box along with about 7 2009 quarters.

Will post my penny box results tomorrow gotta work tonight

My experience has been completely variable. Sometimes I find more in larger cities and other times I find more in rural areas. My biggest problem is 85% of the banks I go to, I know there are other people going. Thats the problem with the northeast, there seems to be more people doing it.

My only advice is to keep at it. When I first started, I would drive far out of my way and make trips to get halves but I don't really do that much now. I'll go slightly out of my way or make sure I hit banks I pass but I'm not taking road trips now. The cost of gas was usually greater than the silver return.

Just started reading posts from this thread. When you all say you searched through boxes, do banks sell you "boxes" of coins? If so what denominations, are they mixed, how much, etc?

Which kind of coin are you looking to order? For halves its 500$ for dimes and quarters i believe $250 a box. In some banks they also give you fee's mine is $4 per box in my other bank they wanted to charge me $10 :\.

    hope his helped.

I went through another box of dimes and found two Rosie's, not sure if that is good or not but I bought a roll yesterday and found two rosies which was awesome!! I can never find any banks that have any halves so i just stick with those! I have found that I have better luck at rural banks with a coin counting machine in the lobby. I guess some grandma or grandpa empties there old change collection, which works out good for me!!

    Halves - $500
    Quarters - $500
    Dimes - $250
    Nickels - $100
    Pennies - $25

Not sure what dollar coins are, but I'd imagine either $500 or $1,000.

Where you located, out of curiosity? I've been finding TONS of silver dimes, I'm at 96 now in 6 weeks or so.

Ask if you can buy the bags directly out of the coin machine. I must have asked and/or called 20 different banks around here with coin machines in the lobby. Everyone of them told me that they can't sell the coins in the machine. They have to get sealed and shipped out to Dunbar.

On a side note, I talked a Dunbar driver today as he was delivering coins to the bank I was at. I asked how much coinage they keep on hand (halves specifically) in their warehouse and if it was possible to get to the bottom to get the oldest coins. I also asked about first in-first out. he said that everything was completely variable and depended. Sometimes he said they try to clear entire areas or paletes, and other times they just take from the top and stack on the top (first in-first out). He said to ask the bank to request "old coins." He said he has no clue what that would do but it might be the best bet.

    Just an FYI

Half way through latest box of cents. Found one 1972 S DDO-003, posted a pic, misplaced it. Back to sort and found another one, or the same one twice ? LOL I think 2 though, because I have a large cup I put the errors in until I can get them identified and into flips.

Hate to label anything without someone else verifying it, because of my eyesight.

Went thru 2 boxes of pennies and also got a third today from the 2 boxes of pennies I found the following

    33 2009 pennies and about 15 2010 pennies didnt keep the 2010's
Found a 1910 wheat penny in the 2nd box
In the first box I found a 1926D Penny
also found total about 15 wheat pennies including the above ones.
So far into my third box this one has great potential I think
Found a 1954 Canadian Penny completes my canadian cent years from 1938-1964
also in the first roll found 4 wheat cents hopeing to find more will post my results when Im done.

I kept a rolls worth of 2010 shield pennies. Now I just toss em back. Once I get a full roll of each of the '09 designs, I'll probably start tossing those back too.
