Thanks for the heads up...that coin looks lightly toned on the reverse and blast white on the obverse...so not enough toning for my taste....I am looking for rainbow goodness my man...and not the purple/pink/blue neon raw variety common on Ebay :)

Do you think people are dipping them more now?

No I just think that collectors identified how undervalued the really nicely toned examples were a few years back and the scarfed them all up....or that maybe my perception of how many were on the market years ago was skewed since I had easy access to some due to the circle of toned coin collectors I associated with?

Rim toning is a little too dark for my tastes, but it's still a beaut.

    Is that slabbed?

    Shane,

I have never been a fan of Northeast's photos. Can you please show us your version when you get the coin. I want to know what the colors really look like and whether or not the bands really are non-existent. I have to give Doug credit in this regard. I used to buy coins like this simply due to their outstanding toning. After many lengthy discussions with Doug, I came to the realization that incredible toning is not always a good enough reason to ignore other shortcomings of the coin. Undoubtedly, the most important feature of Mercury dimes are the bands which collectors want fully struck. This coin is almost NB (No Bands) and without the toning, it would probably be unsaleable. IMO, 1944-S Mercury dimes are too common not to insist upon excellence with respect to every element of the grading process, including strike.

I reserve the right to change my mind once I see your photographs which are always outstanding.

Actually this is a 1945-S and I know those are more difficult to find well struck than the 1944-S but not necessarily rare with bands but yes the image shows zero bands so I will post a full luster image once it arrives. The good news for me is that I am a collector who cares very little about the strike of the coin....FBL, FT, FSB....I couldn't give two hoots as for me the eye appeal comes from the toning and not the strike. I know for others they want the whole package, luster, strike, color etc....nothing wrong with that.... :)

Sorry...this coin is in a PCGS MS65 holder......

looks like the bands have been washed out with excessive light... which makes me think this coin may be very very darkly toned in hand and the color only apparent under the brightest of lights. will be interesting to see the pics.

Now that you mention it, it definitely is overexposed... didn't really take a close look at it before. It'll be interesting to see your pics, Kryptonite.

Wow! That is a very pretty coin Shane even if the bands are mush. Nice pickup!

Nice eye appeal, even with the weak strike.

Nice colors, but man the strike. I hate to be a jerk but this is what is called a 65 nowadays? I mean both sides are weak, I thought TPG'ers were market grading. Doug, am I wrong to think this would have been 63 at best 15-20 years ago?

No offense man, I think its a pretty coin, I am just used to older slabs I guess. Either that or I am just off my rocker, which is a distinct possibility.
