So I move back to school in 2 weeks, and I have a few predicaments...1. my collection will remain at home 2. I don't know anyone at school that collects, and none of my friends know 3. there is only ONE bank within walking distance, so that means no roll searching? 4. unless I buy online the next time I make any purchases will most likely be Christmas... How would you cope?
Should I also mention that it's a small campus where most everyone knows everyone, and their business?
Slamster, I know exactly how you feel. I have been in college forever and I had the same problem not once, but twice. Collection at home-yep definate downer as you can't get pics. Still, I recommend not having any of your collection in the dorms as they are likely to be stolen. Bank deposit boxes are a great asset though for securely and comfortably holding your collection you are currently working on. 2. No friends that collect means I had to resort to online communities (mainly this one) for my coin talking/listening/reading outlets. Coinworld is a fun online resource too. 3. If you had a car you could drive from bank to bank. I imagine college is in a well populated city so many banks should be accessed locally. Personally, when I got in college I gave up on the roll searching and spent most of my time just researching a series I really liked. 4. No coin dealers in town or even in the next town over? I avoid coin buying online like the plague but if you are well informed and have a great seller/pics I imagine it can be done. Best of luck with your educational endeavors and maintaining your coin collecting enthusiasm.
No car is definitely going to hinder my ability to seek out banks and coin dealers. Plus, parts of the area are rather seedy...So looks like I'll be lurking and counting down the days until my vacations haha
SAM, I'll suggest you fore go roll searching and other collecting during the semester unless you really start Jonesing for it! Instead, buy some books you'd like to study on numismatics or even check out your school and the town's library for numismatic titles you could read. Instead of buying coins/notes, just save your money while you study, then buy something when you go home on break or when you really really find something special in an auction or elsewhere. The close proximity to others might not be conducive to the safety of your collection in your dorm either. Maybe you could initiate a campus numismatic club but I would personally keep my collecting activity quiet. :smile
Haha "hey guys, I decided to bring my 250 pound safe to school with me for my last two semesters, want to help me bring it up the stairs? I'd really appreciate it." That'd go over well with the roommates. Reading is a good idea. Definitely going to go through a bit of withdrawal. Need a good find these last two weeks. Anybody want to stack a roll for me? haha
safes are as good as leaving your valuables out in the open, if they don't bolt to the floor from the inside. i think reading is a good idea as long as you have the time to still study. everyone around my age is going back or starting college, it makes me sad that i can't go.
