From what I see the President 's name was Mellon and the Banks name was Mellon as well. I am traveling and do not have Kelly's book with me..I thought this was kind of cool. Will not be home until Friday anyone have Kelly's at hand to look up the Bank and see if the relation is the same?
Good eye RickieB: Mellon was founded in 1869 by Thomas Mellon and his sons Andrew W. Mellon and Richard B. Mellon, as T. Mellon & Sons' Bank. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellon_Financial
I was staring at this note earlier and noticed the two Mellon names as well but didn't know of the significance on this note. I just thought of all the various institutions in Pittsburgh that bear the name Mellon.
I have that EXACT NOTE What my inventory shows is: The Melon National Bank of Pittsburgh $5 Large Mellon, ch.6301 I'll have to get to the SDB and pull it and let you know what mine is like but I bet it's the same sig's and everything!
i love the mellon note! the mellon family was one of the premier families of pittsburgh, much like the Carnegie's and etc. i believe the banks were mostly sold to citizens. i remember being a young kid and going to mellon bank.. i think i am going to save up and get one, that would be a great note to have.
No sorry unfortunately that is what I have listed but I'm betting it's a plain back since I have the Mellon notation it's for the shape of the vignette on the back and not the bank or signatures in this case.
Awesome notes everyone! I really like those large size notes! I just got in my first gold certificate today. I'm pretty happy with it.
I snapped these up from eBay for a decent price. I think the Black Eagle is one of the best looking notes out there - someday I hope to pick up a better grade.
good looking notes Coinup! Those are nice looking no matter what grade they're in if you ask me. Congrats! :thumb:
Makes you feel rich doesn't it? I went to one show and bought 180 Trillion dollars! I loved telling people that.
I just priced these on eBay and you can find them for 3 or 4 (U.S.) dollars. Of course, with the rate of inflation, they'll be down to a buck by the end of the year!
