Bought a lot of 1970S cents and ive read all the ways too tell the difference between the large date and small date but I still cant tell for sure. After about an hour of looking at them Ive given up and will save it for another day. But since I took this picture figured id post it. Even though if it did turn out to be a small date Id be hard pressed to find it again. :)

The easiest way to tell is by looking at the "Liberty" I have not seen a single one that did not have a weak and mushy "IBERTY"...

I disagree. As soon as you get some grease in the large dates die, it is going to look like a small date. Look at this thread http://www.cointalk.com/t93080/. It is discussed ad nausium. BTW, the OP has a large date.

I have a larger and small date 1970 s cent, the best way I was able to figure this out. Is by the (9). If the curve part of the 9 points down its a large and if it the curve part points across its a small. I have a small date and i dnt have a musty liberty.:D

Antiquity has a large date. jhinton posted pictures of a large date and a small date to help Antiquity distinguish between the two.

Could you post a picture of your small date without the weak liberty please?

Yep, I have a pcgs ms64 small date, looks like a "real" first strike and everything, including Liberty is pretty strong, even though, if it were a later die state, Liberty would look pretty lousy. Was it Wexler that said all small dates have a weak Liberty - I don't believe it's a good diagnostic for this and the opposite reason (some large dates have a weak Liberty too).

The OP's pic is a large date.

There's nothing like having a certified one to compare. That's why I bought one.

Not sure if wexler said that or not, I will look it up tonight when I am at home. I am also not saying that the Liberty is the only way to check, just the easiest. Sure you can have some that are stronger than others and you could have some large dates with a weak liberty but generaly it will always be the small date with a weak liberty. Once I check that, then I look at the other diagnostics such as the hight of the 7 and the curve of the 9.

I guess I break the diagnostic rules. The first thing I notice is how low the bottom of the 7 is in relationship to the 0.
