I was reading a thread today about the cleaning of a 1988 RDV-006. I had not even heard of the variety, so I went to the link (the Lincoln Resource) to see what it was. Of course it was said to be rare. Anyway, I had a cup of 1988 P & D previously sorted but unchecked of about 60-70 coins. I found this ; The coin on the right has the denticles. So, is it the RDV and if so, how much is it worth ? Thanks guys, Gary
No, I was not. I cannot find the thread I saw today, but they talked about cleaning the green off the coin with Verdi-Gone or something. I got curious and started looking at my junk. I looked at several before I thought this one looked like the "G" in the pics on the site. Did I screw up or something ? Are there other PUPs I missed ?
Why do you say that ? Is the "G" a normal one ? Because it sure looks like the stylized one in the pics on the site. Did I mess up ? Are there other PUPs to look for ? If I screwed up, I apologize. but this one looked different than the others I peeked at. My eyes are not as good as they were and my glass is not the best. If it is not the variety, I am sorry. That's why I was asking for some verification.
The one on the right does indeed look like one, if it's a 1988 http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Featured/1988RDV6.html
It is most definitely 1988 D. I can post the obverse of the coin, but just scanned the two side by side for comparison before I wasted everybody's time here. I mean if I could not see a difference on a blow up then there isn't one, right ? But this popped after I looked at a couple of dozen. If it is, should I send it in for grading, or is it even worth it ? Tomorrow, when it's light, I will take a couple of pics of it instead of the scans and get both sides. Maybe a crop of the initials with a better angle ?
Here's the thread you were talking about http://www.cointalk.com/t111414/ As for the scans, I scan mine at 9600, then cut out the feature I need. After that, I resize the cutout to 512 pixels wide.
I can only get 2400 out of my cheapo scanner. I do have a 7.0 mp cam, but I can't get the lighting right indoors.I did take another look. It definitely has a stylized G in the initials and it is most positively a 1988 D. I really looks like the pics on the site. But I can't get a population or any kind of value. Thanks for the link to your post. I would never have known without that information being shared. Thanks
Badthad, I re-read all the posts in Billyrays thread. I now know why you said I was joking. Sorry, but I really did just find this coin today. I sort rolls into cups by year, then examine for errors and varieties when I can look at like coins at the same time. I have never bothered with the 1988's until today. I look at a lot of junk just like all searchers do. I sure could use a bit of luck now and then too. lol Thanks
This thread http://www.lincolncentresource.net/forums/archive/index.php/t-968.html shows final bids of $356.01 $202.50 $213.50 $135.50 But I'm not sure if they're Philly or Denver ones.
Definately need closer clearer pics, but from what I see it looks like a winner. There are only a coupled 88-D's reported so far, so don't lose it,lol...
One of my friends from here has already told me to send it in as soon as possible for grading and authentication. I have read that so far only 10 have been attributed. I put it in a flip already and going to take some more pics through the mylar. lol Honestly, I am a bit of a shock right now. I couldn't believe it when I first saw it. Now have looked at it about 20 times with 35x loupe and the G still has all the attributes.
From what I could glean, these were Philly. Only one collector in the thread stated he had a D but he did say he had not listed it and inferred that the Philly was a duplicate but his D was not. I am sending it in today, I think.
NGC doesn't list it under their Varietyplus listings. PCGS doesnt list the varieties they attribute, but they list everything in except for a few exclusions
Yea, I've been looking for one for YEARS and hundreds of boxes....then you go over to cup full of junk and find one in a few minutes. LOLOLOLOL Life is just not fair!
here is what to look for on the 1988 cents: Note the top of the G. That is the determining thing. Short upper loop or the even with the east edge of the G.
Guys, I got Heritage on-line and the senior numismatist saw the pic and replied that it was a fantastic find. He is researching for prior sales to get an approximation of value. I contacted a local dealer that will submit it for grading. Tomorrow I intend to take it there, get an offer and either submit it or go to the SunCoast Casino and show it to the Pawn Stars ? Maybe if there is time. lol My collection is too small to warrant holding this one. Hopefully, It can be a means to increase the items I do wish to expand. Wish me luck guys. I hope this is real and a good find.
Coop, it was pointed out to me that the "G" is more stylistic than the normal one which looks very much like a plain "C". Comparing them side by side, the "G" certainly does look like the one in the pic. In fact that is the pic I used for comparison. I will know for sure after I see the appraiser at Saraha Coins tomorrow. Thanks for the information. I sure can use all the help I can get. (And luck too) Gary
