RLM, That is the extreme wooding pattern I am talking about. It is so powerful that you notice it almost more than the Lincoln design. I love those !
3 of my latest 11 from circulation As previously mentioned , I own no RB's but these are 3 of the best that I have pulled from circulation in the last 2 weeks.
Thanks! It's the center piece of my Linclon Cent collection. It's in an ANACS VF20 slab. I searched long and hard for the right 09 s vdb. That hole in my album sat empty for years. The woodgraining is actually what pushed me to finally plunk down the cash for that specimen. Now Ive finally filled that hole, well not really cause it's in a slab...ah the joys of collecting.
Kanga, is the 1939 rotated as well? The grain is the same on both sided instead of mirrored. I can only think a 180 degree rotation on a woody could cause that.
I can see why you would think that from my photo , but up close and in hand the graining does run in opposite directions on each side. It is the contrasting alloy mixture that gives the illusion of running from SW to NE, but upon closer inspection it does run from NW to SE as seen in these microscopic photos.
Mine's not as old as those, but I still like it. By the way, 1982 would be the last year for woodies.
I have never seen a memorial woodie in hand, but then I don'e roll search any more. That 1980 is a nice one.
I found this one, this is the only red Memorial woody I've ever seen. Most often Memorial's only have the graining on one side.....this coin is very special.
BadThad that 1980-D is special. The woodies of that year I have seen are so dark it is hard to capture the graining with a camera.
You are going to have to convince me that you can have a true woodie with the graining only on one side. I am not a metallurgist, but it seems a bit difficult to me to get unmixed alloy 1/16" away from properly mixed alloy without anything showing. My guess is that you would be surprised how many of those are environmentally caused. BTW, I like your 80-D.
I can't disagree with that because that's exactly what I think too. LOL However, I have quite a few that are like this. I think it's there, but it's been toned over because the graining is so subtle on these. I don't have a definate answer for why it happens, but it does. Roll search a few hundred boxes like me and you'll find some like that.
More....I have lot of these. I'm telling you guys, they are very tough to find with grain on BOTH sides.
Thad those are strange because all of the Memorial woodies I find have graining on both sides but they are too subtle for me to be able to capture photographically.
