Purchase before this one was a dime from Teletrade that I bid $8 for... was a mid range certified toner 1964d... after fees and shipping it cost me $22. %&^@# !! So,, beware of teletrade !! They will eat your lunch on fees and premiums... that said, they do sometimes offer coins that are hard to find elsewhere... just be ready to bleed to get them. Got this lil' nice toner from the bay for $13 shipped... Ebay is still the place to go for coin deals folks,,, been doing this for decades, since the bay opened, and as a non-dealer, it is the "only" reliable place to go to find nice coins at discount.... but you have to know what your looking at..... that's why the 'guess the grade' exercises are so beneficial. Anyway,, enjoy the pics...... I'll sleep with a smile on my face tonight
Have have plenty of successes with TT. Also note that they have 'Tuesday No Reserve auctions' and sometimes run specials that reduce fees. Also got my ANA membership this year for free on special promotion from TT/ANA.
FWIW, it you had bought that on Heritage, your $8 bid would have wound up at $30. $14 minimum BP + about $8 shipping.
@bahabully What do you search when looking for toned coins on eBay? Do you just search the series of coin and look for ones to follow?
Nice deal and coin! There's deals out there, but they take too long to find. I can search much, much faster at a coin show.
that is one beautiful toner, been searching ebay for something like that and graded but haven't found anything at that price
are those the sellers photos of the franklin or are they yours? i only ask because i wonder if it looks like that in hand? it looks beautiful in the photos!
Hobo - yeah,, TT fees are clearly disclosed. They are expensive fees, beware of them. RLM's - good point, HA fees are similar... everyone should ensure they bid 20-25% low on any coin the don't "must have" in either venue. BadThad - also a good point - shows offer a wide selection, I've never personnal found any deals as good as some of those I've found on ebay at any show,, but then again, I only tend to make 1 round through each show and I'm out. Panda/Duke/Stealer - I simply searched "toned" to find this one. The pic shown is mine,, the seller's pic can be seen in the link below. Note the difference between the pics,, it's all about lighting, I was outside when I opened the package, in full sun, and almost fell down when I pulled this beauty out of the packing. In poor light, it looks like a standard toned silver spoon (charcoal'ish),,, but with just " a bit " of light color starts to show, with good light all the gray is replaced with color, and in high light (like sunlight or under a viewing lamp) > wow !.... this is the general view of all these highly colorful toned coins,,, the better the light, the better they look.
No!. Everyone should know what the fees are BEFORE they bid. Heritage's are the maximum of $14 or 15%. Allowing 20+% will cost you more than a couple coins.

Allowing 20+% will cost you more than a couple coins. << sorry RLM's, I was speaking in the context of "deals" and not in the going after it mode, as I was in this auction. In the "going after it" mode I agree with you, although I don't really care about the fees when I'm in this mode.. just as long as the coin doesn't soar into the land of lunacy. Now to restate, for those who like a coin in either HA or TT, and would like get a deal on it as well, then bidding 20-25% below what they would like to pay for it should ensure thier expectations are "exceeded" and maybe impart a feeling of having received a good deal,,, rather than a fair deal. More to my point,,, forget about going after any coin less than $25'ish in either venue,,, the minimum fees and shipping will generally eat $20. Also,, I'm pretty sure HA fees are a "minimum" of $14 or 15% (whichever is greater). Further to my point,,,, if you looking for a "deal",,, ebay is comparitively the best venue imo, no fees and a greater population of collector to collector offerings vs. dealer to collector or even worse, dealer to auction house to collector... where markup markup is the name of the game.
I stand by my statement to know what the fees are and then you will not get surprised. On Heritage, anyway, they tell you just what your total bid (including BP) for at least the next minimum acceptable bid. Now, as for the line above, you would not care to explain that, would you? '"minimum" of $14 or 15%' says you pay 15¢ on the dollar up to but not to exceed $14. That is not how it works. And "whichever is greater" directly contradicts "minimum of".
HA - yeah, I like the way they disclose the actual cost by including BP with each next bid displayed... and I like HA more than TT... both are good for finding that hard to find coin. The bay is best for the deal. Minimum of $14 or 15% (whichever is greater) means just what is says. HA charges a min of $14 BP for any item sold.... so anything for ~$93 or less, you'll pay $14 because 15% of anything under 93 bucks is less than $14. Anything sold for over $94 will have the 15% applied to it because it will be greater than $14. So for a $1 item won, you'd pay $15 bucks for. ($14 bp) for a $100 item won, you'd pay $115 bucks for. (@15% = $15 bp) Maybe I needed some commas. Minimum of $14 , or 15%, whichever is greater.
