The US Mint has some neat commemorative coins. Can they only be purchased through the Mint, or would a dealer have them as well?

    Thanks

Thanks for the links and guidance. There is a coin shop I've been wanting to check out; hopefully I can find something there.

Take a close look at them - you should be able to pick out ones that look pretty much perfect. If not, the dealer is dumping junk. That's one advantage to ordering the latest issues from the mint, you get to cherry pick the best ones.

    Hey flower,
You may want to check out to pre-82 commemoratives if you hope to make your money back some day. just a thought

Do you mean you buy 100 and then cherry pick the best and send the rest back? This sounds unethical to me.

Where did he say that he did this? And where did it say that they were getting sent back to the mint?

He did refer to dealers that order large amounts then sell the junk to customers saving the high grade ones.

    Probably for TPGing I'd guess...

I didn't see any mention of this here, but the practice does happen, which is why it is increasing prudent of buyers to place orders early when a new series is released to avoid such returned merchandise that may grade lower should it be submitted to a TPG for slabbing or should those coins contain defects which a collector would find unappealing to the eye but the Mint quality control would miss and allow to be sent out to the customer.

  14. I have never returned anything to the mint, but was wondering what they really do with returns. I have heard many speculations but never seen anything in writing. I am guessing that they ask for a reason why the item was returned. If someone states something like "changed my mind" or "not happy with the design in hand," then after some quality control checking of the returned item(s), I can see them sending out to another customer. However, if someone returns an item for "poor quality" or "damaged" or something similar, I cannot imagine the mint sending the coin(s) out again to another customer. TC

The Mint doesn't seem to put many policies in writing as we learned about the bullion pricing grid a short while ago...

Products get returned to the fulfillment center as indicated by the address on the Return Form that comes with your order. Products do not get returned to the Mint. Items are inspected upon return and given some level of tolerance, can be restocked then shipped out with new orders. The fulfillment center doesn't care about what collectors consider return worthy for low grade potential. Very obvious error-coins are screened for in the first place so they don't get out too often. Other damage to OGP might be replaceable if the coin is okay to be repackaged, but I do not know if the fulfillment center is equipped to handle this. Coins with a Precious Metals composition which are unsaleable to the public are typically liquidated through the bullion dealers network until inventories are depleted.

If you have kept any of your order invoices from the Mint, just look at the bottom portion, Return Form. It asks you the reasons and to itemized your return. It's fairly straightforward, but a customers reasoning may not be nor be accurately recorded on the Return Form.

UNETHICAL? The mint is a business that sometimes sends out junk, which any comsumer has 30 days to return. I usually buy five of each and return them until I'm satisfied - usually only takes one return, but sometimes two.

Actually, when buying from the US Mint, you have just 7 days "for any reason" to return unwanted merchandise.
    US Mint Return Policy

And as stated earlier, as evidenced on this web page for the return policy, returned merchandise is sent back to the Fulfillment Center.

Hmm, thought it was once 30 days. Guess I haven't bumped into that problem, as returns are usually in the mail in a day or two.

It used to be thirty days but the mint changed it to 7 days early last year. I think it had something to do with the fluctuations in the bullion market.

  20. When I purchased my LN6 (Lincoln Coin & Chronicles) set last year, I ordered within the first 5-10 minutes but it got lost in transit for awhile and was delayed in delivery to me. After talking with customer service, I ended up receiving a set that had no sealed shrink wrap around it, so was concerned that it was a return. However, when I opened the set it was clear that the set was untouched and the coins were flawless. TC

I got two sets, neither were sealed in shrink wrap, just a simple card stock sleeve over each case. the sets were just dropped in the box with a bit of brown paper shoved in as padding.
