I know I could have posted this in the Morgan thread, but there is too much of special interest in this one to let it get buried in the pile. It's an 1878S in a PCGS MS64 slab. I can't find it on the VAMWorld site, but that doesn't come as any surprise.

NOTE: I have a lot of photos to post, so please don't reply to this thread until I have loaded all of them. Thanks!

    I've given this one a name.........Apollo 11 Morgan

It looks like a space capsule on her cheek, and there are a couple of "asteroids" to the east-northest heading its way. The marks in question were examined under the microscope, and they are definitely raised.

The 4th Star on the right is broken as is the case for many of the 1878 obverse dies, and BERT of LIBERTY is doubled.

The bottom serif of the "B" in PLURIBUS is notched, and there is a vertical gouge in her eye.

Finally, the "r" of IGWT is broken. There is also doubling in some of the letters of 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" but it would have been way too many photos to post.

So, what do you think. Does anyone have an idea which VAM this one is?

    Thanks!

I would take a closer look at Vams 40, 45, and 64. So many of these have to do with the engraved feathers that you really need to take a close look at them.

Those are the same ones I looked at, but they just don't give enough detail. The photos aren't really the best, and the written description doesn't mention any other markers. You would think they would have a high quality image of the eye gouge, the raised mark on the cheek and the notch in the "B".

    Thanks!

No one ever sees the letters I see in the field. It looks like BERTY with a second TY just below above and to the right of the capsule to me. But like I said, no one else ever see's it.

As a matter of fact, the capsule is just the right location for the upper inside of the lower R.

Huh? Sorry, but I don't understand what you are trying to say.

That mark that looks like the space capsule, is on her cheek.

Did you look at VAM 7?

The space shuttle, though cool, is most likely not a key factor. It could just be a tiny die chip that is on later state die. The key markers are the broken B, broken star, broken r, and the doubled liberty

It's not the VAM-7. The doubling on LIBERTY on the V7 is on the south side, whereas it is on the west side on mine.

Yes, I realize that the "space capsule" would not be worthy of mention. I just thought it was cool that it looks so much like one.

    Thanks!

Duke, check out my "Morgan toners" thread. I just received them from Shane today, and there is a nice little surprise that came with them.
