Dansco 7171 (Morgan Date Set) question

Anyone ever done this set, or any Morgan collectors out there want to answer some questions?

I would love to do a Morgan set, complete, but that is probably out of my scope and budget.

So, what challenges might I run into just doing a nice year set?

Can this be done on a budget?
My guess is that money-wise it would be about the same as the 7181 ASE Unc book...
Would you compare it to that?

Are there any years in the 'date set' of Morgans that would be a challenge to get in AU/BU?

I guess what I am asking is that if every year of Morgan has at least one MM that is 'average' price? Or are there any year(s) of Morgan that all MMs that year are higher priced?

If I can set up a nice AU/BU date set of Morgans for about what the ASEs cost, that'd be a set I'd like to build. The only one in the book I see right off as being expensive in AU/BU is the CC spot... (The 7171 has one coin a year, then at the end of the collection has 4 spots to show the reverse of each MM)

    THANKS!

Believe it or not you can do Morgans on a limited budget buy purchasing lower grades like MS-60 - 63, AU and less.

I have a couple MS-63 Morgans that I picked up for $70 for both, and an EF Morgan for $18.

I'm doing a date set in PCGS slabs with at least one of each MM in DMPL, PL, and plain old MS63. Budgeting about $2k for everything except 1892-1895, as those are the expensive years for Morgans. I figure you should be able to put together a full year set in AU/BU for about $9k slabbed, give or take $1k. Raw, I don't have a clue, and you risk picking up counterfeits in the big years.

Numis, did you pay $70 per, or $70 total? $70 total is a decent price.

$70 total. $35 each. The NGC slabbed one I bought they were asking $55 for.

Hook a man up. :p PCGS only, though.

My best advice to work on a set of Morgans on a limited budget, stay away from eBay ;)

    I know where there are 3 1886 PCGS MS-63 for $55.

So I should take it that the 92-95 Morgans are going to be high for any mint mark in those years?

    I intend to do raw.
I have some slabbed and some raw Morgans, but I don't think any of them are suited to go into the book if I do this.

I just want a nice example of each year in a problem free AU/BU coin...

Well let me put it this way. CC, Carson City, Morgans will be higher because they only minted coins from 1878 - 1893.

An 1892 CC Morgan in Very Fine-20 can value at $225 - $250 compared to an 1892 at $25 for the same grade.

I would pick up a copy of Q. David Bowers' book, Redbook: A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars. It's a great book for collecting Morgans.

    From Bowers' book:

    1892 AU-50 $75

    1892-CC AU-50 $825

    1892-O AU-50 $65

    1892-S AU-50 $2000

    1893 AU-50 $400

    1893-CC AU-50 $2500

    1893-O AU-50 $1100

    1893-S AU-50 $26000

    1894 AU-50 $3250

    1894-O AU-50 $330

    1894-S AU-50 $550

    1895 AU-50 $35000

    1895-O AU-50 $1600

    1895-S AU-50 $1850

Numismatist47, the op is not concerned with the prices of cc's. He wants to know if there are any years where none of the mm's are cheap.

And $70 for 2 ms-63's is nothing special.

    Thanks Jersey...

I have general Morgan knowledge and have owned many common Morgans over my 40 years, I am looking for some key info and tips on a date set.

Anything can be done if you set your mind to it, i just wouldnt think of it as impossible on a budget

First off I never said what I paid was special.

Second off, I only mentioned CC Morgans in direct answer to the OPs question about 92-95 for being high regardless of mm.

Finally, I then posted book prices for all mm Morgans from 92-95.

As mentioned by the pricing above the mid 90's are you only issue. Doing the date set allows you to see some great coins for the year. You can do "s" mint coins for 78-82. These are excellent looking coins and will likely be semi pl. Then you do Philly minted coins for a few years and switch up the mintmarks at some point. It would be a fun project, not hard you should be able to be picky.

BTW, if you're gonna do CC's, do 82-84. Cheapest years.

EF would be my limit for what I've budgeted for individual coin purchases.

I blew my budget away and turned a 3 month project into a 1 year project when I decided to toss in CC, PL and DMPL Morgans... If I get this job I'm interviewing for next week, we'll make that 6 months instead.
