Grandpa left us 1967-2003 kennedy half dollars - trying to find the rare ones - been looking through the sites and trying to figure it out lol Can someone tell me what to look for and what year... thanks!!
None of them are really "rare". Up until 1971 (1970 and earlier), they were made of 40% silver, so put those aside. The rest are essentially worth face value unless they are missing the designers initials on the rear between the tail and right leg of the eagle, or if they have a doubled die somewhere. Oh, also, 2002 and 2003 weren't put into circulation, and I keep those. They probably won't ever demand a premium, but...
Welcome to the neighborhood. There aren't any really rare Kennedy's. There are a few variety's which would add a premium over face value, but a lot depends on the condition of the coins. If you are new to collecting, you may be thinking that they are all really shiny, but that doesn't mean anything since uncirculated coins may range from Mint State 60 to Mint State 70, and there are also Proof coins which have a similar range in grades. There are also a few that were struck in 90% or 40% silver. Photos and a list of dates with mintmarks would help. Chris
I doubt you have any, highly doubt, and will tell you it's more of a PITA than it's worth for looking through them.
ok take photos of each year (front and back?) and I need to look for the initials and the mark (mintmark) on the front?
I would just make a list of what years you have and the mints of each year. We can then tell you what you are missing(if you want to try and finish to collection), or if you are trying to sell them then throw up some pictures and we can help you with the value of the coins.
yes I would like to get the values - hubby is keeping one from each year at the end of it all... the kennedy half dollars are just the tip of the mountain. I truly appreciate the help. Best way to take a picture? suggestions
Coming for me as a collector if he is keeping one from each year as some what of a collection or to pass on or what not i would keep them all and sell theduplicat but that is just what i would do. As for pictures i no nothing about.
Kennedy half dollars were struck in three different mint locations - Philadelphia, Denver & San Francisco - If your husband wants to keep a complete set, he would need one from each mint facility. Chris
67 - 70 are silver clads, 40% total silver in them. Kennedys that are not proofs are selling from $5 - $12 in MS-64 to 70 with a premium for silver ones made after 1971.
alright I took the time to run through them... I took pictures of the ones that don't look like they have a mark on the back to my naked eye... 1971, 1971 (same back order), 1972, 1982 (same back order) and then the 2003 ones someone mentioned - they have their marks. ***trying to reload pictures sorry***
the mint mark is on the front between the middle 2 date number and up there should be a P,D, or S, and the mint mark on the '64 is the only one on the back and it will be to the left of the left eagle claw.
