I picked up a mixed lot of world coins at my local shop. In it I found this coin from India. I have limited experience with errors, less with world coins :) It appears to be struck through like I have seen on Lincoln cents. Please correct me if I am wrong.

And next to regular coin for reference...

The denticles appear to be well struck so I assume that the planchet was not tapered. I think you are correct that it is a struck through coin. Do you see the texture of unstruck planchet in the area of the struck through and proper strike on the other side? Exactly what it was struck through, we will never know. Nice pick-up IMO.

Looks like a grease filled die, but I'm new at this

Yes, struck through grease or other mint debris. Sometimes, it is more obvious what the coin is struck through such as cloth or staple etc.

the first coin looks like a weak strike wherein the word India in Hindi is worn off, either that or due to circulation it appears that way. the reference coin that you have put in, i willing to guess thats a moscow mint coin from either the years 1999 or 2000 which were really well struck...

also notice that there 2 different varieties of the lion-head... the one with ears and the other one w/o ears :)

    nice pics... thx for sharing!

Is the other side of your "error coin" properly struck? It would be nice if you could confirm this and/or post a photo.

As Mumbapuri pointed out the rupee coins produced elsewhere are of much better quality.

I recently did a check of my 5 rupee coins (that's the denomination I mean) and I found 25% of the ones produced by Indian mints had some error, mostly with the security edging.

And thanks Mumbapuri for pointing out the ears (no pun intended). I sometimes have problems working out the types on circulated coins - counting the rows of fur on the manes etc.

Thanks everyone for all the comments.

The other side does look okay. I'm at work right now, but I will post a photo when I get home.

Very true, some look much better struck than others.
