Alright, I have been lurking for a while but I will take the Richmond group, 1928 and up 1-20 + stars. Although i think this will be quite a slow process :)

Slow it is... for many of us. LOL! Learned that real fast myself. =)

So do you have much of a start or just starting fresh? Would love to see any notes you may have to share.

    Welcome to the District Group!

I have a 34c $10 and a 76 $2 from Richmond. I am also putting together complete run sets of $1 star notes, mostly pulling from circulation, so I have an 03, 03A, and 06 $1 star notes. My camera batteries are dead but I will get some up shortly.

So here are my notes, oldest to newest:

So I have a question about collecting these small size federal reserve notes. I am finding a lot of the older circulated bills really have very little premium over face. The 1934 $10 I bought for $15, and I see quite a few where they are 60-80 years old and sell for 2-3 times face. What are the chances these things increase in value at all in the future if in the last 70 years it only doubles, you know what I mean.

So I am getting the feeling that circulated common older bills are really not worth buying. I am not necessary looking to make money on collecting, but the buying power of $10 in 1940 in today's dollars is $150, I would consider that losing my shirt if I was the one that put that $10 away 70 years ago to sell it for $15. With that said, the high grade uncirculated bills bring a good premium. Here is an example of the 1929 circulated:

    vs uncirculated:

I am on a limited budget but I am getting the feeling that buying high grade uncirculated bills really is the way to go. Is that other's feelings as well? If so I may start by picking up relatively recent uncirculated bills just to get started while saving up for uncirculated older bills.

    beef...

One of things I alwyas say is "buy the best you can afford"... for me and the District Set I am working on I will accept nothing less than AU58.
I have had to bend that self imposed rule due to scarcity of some older stars. My personal feeling is that a collection of high grade notes will always be in demand. While expense is something to consider, it stands to reason that a quality high grade note will cos more and will hold the higher premium over the long haul.

    Just my $2 worth..

I don't have a problem picking up used, worn older notes...it's like coins, you get what you want if you want to pay... Used notes have character. Nothing against CU, I have my share, however I also have my share of used, worn out notes.

I have just started collecting bills but think I need a focus before I start spending money on a little bit of everything. I need to purchase a good book on bills so that I have an idea of how many bills I am looking at. I noticed post #206 Krispy listed 44 $1 bills from 1963 to the current. Does that mean each of you are looking for (approximately) that number of bills for $1, $2, $5, $10, and $20?

I would like to take L12 San Francisco but need to be sure I am actually collecting what this group is talking about (I would limit myself to $1,2,5).
    So far I would have-
    $1 2006 L 31013636 R
    $2 1976 L 19560197 A
    $2 2003A L17071690 A
    $5 2001 CL 64070118 C
    correct?

Can someone point me to a website where I can figure where older bills were printed? such as 1935, is it the letter after the year?
    Sorry-really new at this.

Coinup, where do you find those, from circulation or did you buy them?

Buy from dealers online, coin shows or eBay...lots of decent deals if you're patient

Sounds like you pretty much have the idea, every series of every bill in a district. The website uspapermoney.info is a good resource to see which notes were printing and their print size, plus the guy who put the site together posts here, I think his uersid is 'numbers'.
