I found this coin while roll searching today. It is a 1980-P Lincoln Cent that appears to have a strongly doubled "W" in "WE"---

However, the coin does not match the description for the only known DDO listed at CONECA or in the CPG since there is no other doubling evident in other letters of the legends on the obverse of the coin.

    Is this a doubled die?

Feedback, opinions and comments are most welcome. Thanks!:smile

What's that to the left of the "WE"?

Good question. That's why I posted this most unusual and unique coin---to try to get answers about it. The doubling certainly doesn't appear to be strike or machine doubling as suggested. It is uniform and rounded, not flat and shelf like in appearance with definite creases in the font----and there also is no evidence of strike doubling anywhere else on the coin----usually strike doubling will appear in more than one font----

I suspect that some hard grease got alone the inclused "W" of the die, aligning along the one side and tops which produced the narrow higher part of that side of the "W". Die deterioration would produce a wider leg (side) rather than a narrower one, and MD would have also produced a normal leg, with a flattened adjacent area.

    Hey Ferdy,

I do not know if this will help but attached are images of 4 different 1980-P cents in different grades with altered lighting to compare the other letters in the motto besides the "W" to.
