I have just received a rather large collection of The Numismatist softcover books. They span from 1913 to 1990, but it's not a complete set. Some entire years are missing and some years are missing some of the monthly issues.

Are these worth anything to anyone or do I have something to start my wood stove with this winter?

    Nice bit of history. :)

Don't use 'em in the wood stove and enjoy reading those old articles.....I bet there's a lot of good info in those old copies.

I would imagine that there are probably a few numismatic historians who would be interested in them. Please don't destroy them.

Early issues of The Numismatist are highly collectible, especially anything pre-1930. In general the earlier the issue the more valuable it is. Of course, condition will determine value. Issues from the early teens in near-perfect condition may bring $25 to $50. Issues from about the '70s forward generally do not command much of a price.

Yes, they are worth something if they are in good condition ( for their age). Complete years are easiest to sell. They appear occasionally on Ebay, You can always make a list and put in the classifieds on the forum after you qualify. If they were bound, the price is much higher :)

A while back (maybe 2 years ago) I paid $80 for a complete set of Numismatists for the year 1906.

I sent one of our members as a prize, the entire year of 1908 , neatly bound . It is a treasure chest of information. When I purchased it, I paid Over $150.00 for it. 1908 was an important year for Numismatist's .

Yes 1908 was quite a year. Dr Heath, founder of ANA, died that year. I have 7 issues out of 11 for that year (Oct. and Nov. was combined) ,but not the Dr. Heath death issue. I supplement the 1908 Numismatist with the 1908 issues of Mehl's Monthlies. I get a early perspective of the year 1908 in the coin collecting hobby with both stated magazines.

Yes , I hope the member that I sent it to, appreciates it, as I had . I'm at a point, where if I passed, everything would probably be tossed in the trash, so I decided to disperse some of my library to hopefully appreciative collectors. I miss reading about all the going's on in 1908.

I'm facing the same situation down the road. Little by little I will auction off what I have and donate the rest to the coin club.

I apologize to the members if I broke the "self promotion" rule of the forums. I was simply trying to find out what the books might be worth to a collector since I don't have a clue and I thought that posting a list of what I have would be the best way to do that.

    Once again.....my apologies

Fortunately for those of us who use The Numismatist for research purposes, but don't collect them, digital copies of pretty much most (if not all) are available digitally online for no cost.

For what it's worth I never felt that this post was "self promoting" but after reading the original post I can see where one could get that feeling. If you would have left out "to anyone" in the OP I don't think the mods would have had a problem with it. Sometimes the words we choose to get a point across are taken in a spirit we never intended. Words are powerful tools. Choose and use them wisely.....:)

There are auction archives for these. Search some of the Numismatic book sellers. Kolbe & Fanning , Orville Grady & an array of others . There is no set price, each stands on it's own merits of condition . If you like you can e-mail me the list you have and I'll look through them for you. You just can't post it in the open forum. E-mail me.
