Hey, I used to drink beer all day AND collect coins. I only drink occasionally now Coins are way cooler anyway.
what stereotype? I collect coins, ride harleys, and have tattoos..... but I don't tell girls that I'm a coin collector.
All the blasphemy in this thread! Beer is freaking awesome. Coins are freaking awesome. Beer makes me drunk, and when I get drunk, I get awesome! Beer wins by a narrow margin.
So what do drunks do for fun or to enjoy themselves? I'm a coin collector, overweight, use glasses, and always congested...LOL but I'm happy
Lets see since I started collecting when I was 10ish I've only heard negative comments once back when I was in college looking through some coins on my desk that I had accumulated throughout the year. My roomie at the time thought the idea of collecting coins was ridiculous. Additionally he couldn't grasp who in their right mind would collect, sell, or even buy coins for more than their face value. To counter his arguments I started on my anti-Apple spiel (he's an audiophile and pro-Apple) and got an argument going to change topics. Ah I loved arguing with him.
Well that explains your username lol This thread reminds me of the "Hail to the Geek" song by Deaf Pedestrians. It's good to be a geek!
When I'm asked about my hobbies I always state coin collecting first and see the reaction of the person and usually it is that "loser" kinda look in their face but, then I follow it up with stock car racing as my 2nd hobby and you can see the confusion in their face. They wouldn't expect somebody to be part of the "2 different extremes" as they sometimes say to me. When they talk about how lame coin collecting is I just mention about the invest end of it and how much they are possibly missing out on by simply not checking their change. Usually by the end of the conversation I look like the smarter one lol.
Well, thankfully you said that and had a great beer as an avatar. If you had said that and your pic was a bud light can, then we'd throw you in that stupid category. In fact, I'm cracking open a nice Sam Blackberry Witbier as I type this. Guy~
i need to try that, my favorite sam adams is the winter lager and old fezziwig ale. if you are ever in western pa, you should try finding railbender ale from the Erie brewing company. just go to a steeler or pirate game they have it there! its the best beer i have ever had(or one of them). its so smooth and not to malty with a hint of fruit. edit nevermind, it seems its made its way down to Florida, so who knows were else its at, if interested keep your eyes out for it. we need an official beer thread!
It just so happens I'm in western PA quiet often. I'll be there for a few weeks in September, so I'll have to check that out. I plan on bugging Doug while I'm there. Maybe he'll have some waiting for me. Guy~
Railbender is good stuff, but nothing tops the selection of beers you can get from Victory. Awesome beer and the restaurant isn't bad either. But that's all in the Philly area.
Eccentric sounds better, yes. Reminds of the years when people used to call me a crazy (expletive deleted). Now that I am gray and wrinkled, the same people call me eccentric.
I would only expect people to think negatively of my coin collecting hobby if I gave them the impression that it the ONLY thing I do and enjoy. I look at people sadly who ONLY play golf, or ONLY watch baseball on TV, or ONLY do model trains. Personally, I have a variety of diversified interests and hobbies. If I ONLY collected coins, I would be bored out of my mind.
Sorry, had to smile over this one. I could help that is was because you were from Philly. -- Seriously, both have a bit of stereotype for me when thinking about Ben Franklin/coinage in America, Ambition, and "anger" taking on a fancy dance of interests. Fill up a coin sock and knock em over the head. About the loser part - well that I get. Most that I know who collect coins are pretty private, and I know alot of people who do. I am one of those people that even strangers feel comfortable telling me their secrets. For the most part I am good with others secrets, especially coin secrets because of the security factor. I guess it is human nature in a world where "discretion" is not as common and for those that do practice discretion, they can be in range of harsh and unjust punishment. I would'nt sweat it. Try to be forgiving. It gets easier as I get older. It will for you too. Have fun, Post often, and collect coins!
Personally I would disagree with the first part of that. Over heard the next morning when he was no longer "awesome". "Why the heck did I bid on THAT???" []
