I found this bust.. it has great detail, however there is a big line going through the coin on the front side... the seller claims that it is a die crack.. anyways right now the bidding is at $100 and it ends in a few hours.. what do you think?

#1) Definitely NOT a die crack.

#2) the good news (?) possibly a struck thru.

Why? Because if post mint damage, I would expect to see some effect on the reverse.

So what about the value of the coin?

    Definitely NOT a die crack.
If it were then the "line" would be raised, not incised.

    Definitely post-Mint damage.
On the reverse look behind the eagle's head.
Notice the lighter linear feature going to the rim through the "M".
That's the "effect" on the reverse.

It didn't get any bids... I think it is best to avoid coins like that one.

unless you can be sure it is an error

    That's exactly right.

A big gouge down into the surface of the metal cannot be a die crack.

That's a seriously damaged coin, easily available as problem-free.

It kinda looks like a strike through to me... even if it is a strike through it's still worth less then a problem free example. Earlier coins had lots of problems so strike through's and cuds and planchet flaws are common and considered less desirable by advanced collectors of the coins. Without the strike through... sure it's probably worth $100... but with it It's not.

Maybe my eyes are not seeing straight, but I think I am seeing some detail down in that "crack" - with the same toning as the rest of the coin. If that is correct, I do not see how that can be anything except PMD.

The die may have broke in striking.but only the coin know that or the person who damaged it
$100.00 not bad for 1819 if not China's best

If the die broke the line would be raised, not incused. It is definitely PMD making the coin damaged and not worth a whole lot.

No way that's a die crack. It's a canyon sized gouge.
