Well, no. Not in my book. They're just people who put change in drawers. Coin collectors are people who study coins, who collect them for a specific purpose, and who continue to collect them. Not just throw the odd thing now and then in a drawer.
or not normal I have aspergers syndrome too, overcome most of it, Im not stereotypically shy etc and can socialise just fine. I do tend to come across as very blunt though, which of course cant be helped very cool to see someone else that is the same "breed" as me
I also collect Star Wars toys. I think it's probably best I just not know what people think about me.
......and one day when they've inherited a collection from some distant relative, guess who they'll ask for help? Just be sure to charge them a consultation fee because it's "boring" collecting coins and not getting paid for it. Chris
Yes some people do think we are losers, nerds, or boring!! I've grown beyond the point of careing what people think!! I can't worry about what people think about anymore, can you? Life's too short!!
It has been happening to me off and on for years, that people will want me to identify a coin for them and tell them what it is worth. Mostly very common coins that typically read Nederlanden or Republique Francaise or Espana or such. A couple years ago, a lovely young female friend who worked at a local bank, assured me that she could tell Canadian coins because they all had a picture of "some lady" on them.
Lol, guess thats one good thing of having the same old head on every denomination. Frankly I am tired of Liz ii on every coin that perks my interest. I tend to avoid them afterwards.
I collect coins/currency because they are interesting and I thoroughly enjoy all the activities related to it. History, coin composition, errors, etc.. Also, not to mention the fact that I'm collecting money! There aren't too many other hobbies that can be that rewarding in so many ways. Let people think what they want. Besides.....everyone knows it's stamp collectors who are the boring ones.
Well I may be a "loser" but for me a coin show is also a case of being a kid in a candy shop, and when I'm there this "loser" tends to hang out with millionaires.
Sounds like the typical stereotype for metal detectorists. They can call you a loser and it's all fun and games until you pull out a nice diamond ring... My friends think it's kinda cool that I metal detect and collect coins
Judging by some of the coin dealers here in Rhode Island, I can kind of see where those stereotypes would come from, but I also have an uncle who is very kind, thoughtfull, intelligent, and one of the most generous people I know. And his favorite hobby is...collecting coins. Back when I was just starting out, he gave me a huge help by giving me dozens of old silver coins that had been in the family for generations. I don't think of him as a loser, and I don't know anyone else who does, quite the opposite. I think people have a tendency to remember the negative before the positive, and so when they think of coin collectors, the real losers, who are in the minority, come to the top of their heads.
I collect coins because I like it, it is challenging and yet relaxing at the same time. I'm also a history buff so it comes in handy when doing research that it just happens on a parallel course for me. I wouldn't care if someone called me sad or a loser because I know that I am neither. Middle age is still a decade or more off, I have a great life and an even better job, so bring on the meaningless insults, I'll just shrug them off on my way to the coin shop.
I am 45 still drink beer and collect coins made more money colleting coins than I did in the stock marketover the years, you may call me a loser on that didnt to my studying like I do on coins but its a great hobby and I love.In fact this is the third collection I have started bought and sold now twice this I wont leaving it to my daughter she started already
Yes, I admit, I'm a loser. In thirty years when I'm sitting in my recliner showing my grandchildren my life's worth of collected coins, which have not only retained their value, but increased in most cases, I'll remember my non-loser friends who are sitting around showing their grandchildren their collection of now 30 year old boats that aren't worth the bird doo that holds them together. My family will scorn my loser ideals when they cash in my collection to buy a house for cash and send their kids to the finest colleges, while my friend's families will celebrate the fact that their non loser lives have afforded their descendants a tow bill and a $35 check from the scrap yard for their life's work. Guy~
hahaha. i think that might be a bit more popular then say...collecting stuff from Pokemon. i used to drink. the only thing i gained then was weight and probably a few enemies. nothing to be proud of from those times. i feel alot better now spending money on coins instead of liquor.
Only one? Some of my friends do taunt a bit when it comes to coins. One gives me his change he gets when I'm with him to "see if it's of interest", I tend to say it's all of interest. I do see where the stereotypes come from and what they mostly look like (Comic Book Guy on The Simpsons), but hey, we know we're a different breed. Think of it as a generational thing, you just need the draw of money to make a million collectors. (i.e. 1955 Poorman's DD, State Quarters, etc.) Thats how I, and many others I've heard of, have gotten started.
i really don't talk to a lot of people anymore, most of the kids i grew up with are on drugs or into something shady. its sad when you can name 5 close friends that are in jail, for either dealing drugs or something to do with them. i am not talking about marijuana either i am talking about harder stuff. i am glad i overcame that and found a hobby, really i should be thanking my girl and her family. we have been together since i was 15, and before everyone got into REALLY bad things. i stopped talking to most of my friends after a few months of being with my girlfriend. glad i did, who knows what i would be doing now. her mother gave me an old collection of coins and thats what sparked my interest, and never looked back. i still will talk to people if i see them, but never associate to much with them. i was pretty popular back in school and also had a football scholarship till i blew out my knee. a few friends have given me coins and not said anything bad about my collecting, really only my girl ever says anything about it. she will look at my new coins when i get them and like what they look like, till i tell her the price. also she tells me not to talk about them around her! i said this in another thread, but she grew up with a step father that was real big into history, coins, and antiques. so i guess she is tired of all that kinda stuff. also i am big into computers, from building them to writing software. i have fixed so many of my friends computers and there families. i am really surprised i have never been called a computer nerd. i don't really do that much anymore, only people i can really trust. i fear i may be asked to do something with a stolen computer, and i don't want anything to do with that. i had a friend call and say, "my buddy, you don't know him but he forgot his password to log into windows, can you help?" normally i would say "yea, i will fix it no problem", but had a bad feeling about this. without going into to much detail, i was right and he is in jail. so no, i have not been called a looser or anything, but even if everyone on the planet called me names, i wouldn't trade it for the other life i could have had.
Honestly, I do not care what people think. Even though I am not technically a coin collector, I like to collect silver art bars. If someone thinks that people who like collecting are "losers", then that person is the one with the problem. I love going to coin shows and it makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop. Nobody offline knows that I collect silver art bars and I do not plan to tell anybody offline that I collect silver art bars. I just live my life the way that I see fit. I do not let people make fun of me or of my hobbies and interests. The people who keep calling coin collectors or other collectors certain names such as "loser" do not know what they are talking about. The best thing to do is to just ignore them and move on with your life.
