I started collecting about a year ago, the vast majority of this coming from work.

    cimg0012.jpg

    2 - 1976 CU $2 bills
    1 - 2006 AU+ $20 SOI/Low serial G star
    1 - 2003A $1 error note, missing district seal
    various $1 star notes 1963A-2006
various fancy serial $1 notes, the newest being G44444478C
    1 - 1957 CHCU $1 Silver Cert

Coins - without going into too much detail
    2 - Walking Liberty halves
    1 - UC Peace Dollar
    2 - EF-AU Morgan Dollars
    1 - Mercury Dime
    1 - V Nickel
1 - AU Seated Liberty Quarter
    1 - Barber Quarter
    2 - AU Buffalo Nickels
1 - EF Indian Head Penny

Lower (You can't see them all): Various 90/40% silver coins, halves, quarters, dimes, a couple wheaties, and a steel penny, a few off center strikes, crappy buffalo, etc..

Here is my latest note addition, a 2003A $1 missing the district seal, the condition leaves a bit to be desired, but I'll take it. NOTE TO KRISPY: This is the note I was previously referring to, I misunderstood my dad when he was describing it.

Anyhow, it's pretty modest, but not too bad for only being a year into it I think. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Thanks,
    John

That is an awesome note with the missing seal! How rare is it?

I really have no idea, there is an EF/AU note that is similar on eBay for $385. It's older though..

I only know the basics at this point.

The missing-seal note looks like it might be a bit questionable.... There's a grayish/whitish area where the seal belongs, making it look suspiciously like the seal was once present but was erased. :(

Also, the black Fed seal and the four black 7's are all printed at the same time, so an error note missing the seal is usually missing those four district numbers too. It's *possible* to get a genuine error that's missing only the seal, with some kind of obstructed printing, but it's unlikely.

On the whole, I suspect that someone's been playing with this note. (And FYI, a large fraction of all "error" notes on Ebay are likewise alterations, so you might not want to use those as a basis for comparison....)

Nice collection you have there, it would be a good idea for you to try and scan both sides of the error notes and post them as we have some very knowlagable members here when it comes to American Banknotes :)

Neat collection you have there! I hope to have a silver cert, at some point. Where did you find yours? Was it purchased, or did you get it in circulation?

I thought the same thing at first, but I can't see any remnant of the seal. The paper is a bit wrinkled and dirty in that area, but it does not look like ink. The gray appearance is the green ink from one wing on the back, it looks like someone "scraped" the front with their fingernail or something on accident, every other part where the seal would be looks normal. Fibers are still present in the seal area and it doesn't look like it was "sanded" away.

After inspecting it when he gave it to me, my impression was that something blocked the print due to the wrinkles, it could also explain the scrape. My dad received it in change at a liquor store, I don't know why someone would spend time manipulating a $1 bill just to end up spending it on booze.

That's good to know about eBay and thank you for playing devils advocate, as you clearly have more knowledge on the subject.

How does one remove something like that off a regular note? (I don't want to do it, genuinely curious) what would be a sign of it being tampered with?

    Hello John:

First please let me say that there are numerous chemical solvents that will remove/dissolve the ink from the note.
If you used a black light on the note in a darkeded room it should reveal any chemical treatments stains in the paper as it is absorbed by the fibers of the paper as well. A while back, TheNoost did some experiments on cleaning notes so I would suggest looking at Threads created by the Noost for this information. EBay has some decent Dealears but also has it's share of crooks as well...this is the sole reason I deal with well known reputable dealers for my note purchases.
Good luck and I hope it turns out to be a genuine error for you.

Thanks for the help, I'll toss it under a light at work today and see what happens.

That missing seal looks fishy to me too... let us know what you find. If you can scan the note for a better look, post a pic of it again please.

Everything checked out under the light, seems to be legit. The fishy look is due to a scrape in the paper and it looks like it printed heavy on one of the wing areas on the reverse, it shows through the front, when I hold it up to the light the "funny" area on the front matches up perfect to the back. I don't have a scanner, but I'll try and remember to take a HQ picture later on tonight.

Finds for the day: 1 - 2003A $1 E Star note, haven't checked the run yet, forgot to write down the serial before I left for lunch.

I purchased the nice one, the other was found in circulation by my dad about a month ago.
