Ok, long story, lot of photos. Among granddad's collection I found a ratty old Whitman Jefferson album 1938-1964 that was complete. This was unusual, because granddad didn't do many albums (mostly did Dansco folders that toned the back of all the coins UGLY, UGLY, muddy brown). So an album -- a complete one -- was pretty rare. Initially I thought I would transfer it to a new Dansco and bring it up to date. BUT I noticed that many of his coins were pretty beat up and I would end up upgrading them which defeats the purpose of saving "his" collected coins. So instead, I got a better copy of his Whitman folder from my dealer (used - for free) and transferred his album to a newer album (and made them all line up straight -- I hate it when they're all topsy-turvy every which way). And I picked up a Jefferson Dansco for me. It's now up-to-date complete. So now, what do I do next? I'm thinking about a Roosevelt dime Dansco. Pics of granddad's album and mine follow:
Well you danco is up to date but never complete till the Jefferson Nickel goes away so you keep collecting. I am doing two Danco's right now a wheat cent and a Roosevelt one. I am finding that dealers don't keep many Roosevelt's in silver on hand unless slabbed or very high quality most of them get sent for melting. I wanted to start with maybe an AU set then slowly upgrade but it's hard to find them in AU clad ones are just as hard but I am finding them from circulation. Ice
I like to search half dollar rolls for silver while making a Kennedy half set with the best condition ones that I find
Congrats on completion! I have 17 incomplete Dansco albums, and I think 8140 is the most fun. I recommend Washington Quarters with proofs.
Hmmm... plantguy & evorlor those are both good suggestions. Especially knowing I can search junk silver for the quarters... and that's a set that's complete since they've switched to state, territory, & ATB quarters... Thanks
The 1932 D and 1932 S cost about $80+/each. Other than that, the most expensive quarters are about $3+ each. I am unsure about the price of the proofs. Mine is only 64% complete. So its like the jefferson set, but the coins are slightly more expensive, and there are 2 key dates which are fun to get. It is inexpensive with all the fun! (I am referring to Dansco 8140, Washington Quarters w/Proofs.)
That's a real nice tribute to Granddad. I'm sure he'd be proud to see these coins displayed in their new album. Coins a little beat up? That's how we used to collect 'em in the old days. You didn't go to the local dealer and buy a pristine gem of a coin. You found what you were looking for right out of the pocket change. Fast forward to today and it's highly unlikely that you could find all of the coins that he so lovingly assembled.
Great tribute to Granddad, as green18 said!!! Now, as far as what to do next? Start another one, and go through the whole process again!!! 2 of something is better than one of something!!!
I have never completed a collection of any series. The hunt is exhilarating and every coin that you add to your collection that brings you closer to your goal increases your pride. I think this is a big reason why people love album collecting. You just don't get that same feeling of accomplishment when collecting slabs. A while back, I created a way for the slab collector to get the same feeling as an album collector while displaying your coins in a way that they can be viewed next to each other just like an album. Tell me what you think! I just love slipping a new photo over one of those dates. A very cool feeling indeed!
Lehigh that's awesome. One of the major drawbacks of the album is what to do about REAL key dates. If I get a $250 coin (like a 1885 or 1886 V nickel), I'm inclined to slab that. I hate to write "refer to slab box" on the album. (Although that is a good idea for a custom token.)
Although I am not yet dealing in the high end coins nor have I purchased any slabbed coins yet, I plan to crack those slabs open and stick them in the albums when the time comes.
