here is the toned 1980 memorial cent i found. the photo's are pretty bad, but i am still learning to take pictures of toned coins. on the obverse the dark or black part is actually blue, i am note sure why it showed up black? and on the reverse, i don't think i got enough light, because almost all the reverse is toned. i had to hold the coin into the light outside to get the pictures, so that is why they are on a weird angle.

Finished checking the box of halves yesterday no DD's. On a separate note I went through a jug of change for a friend at work last night 217.53 total.
    3 wheat cents oldest being a 1941
    1 1944 P nickel
    463 pre 82's
1 1967 dime missing the copper core
    The rest were rolled

Finished a box of nickels last night from Brinks. One war nickel (1943 p) and 17 pre-1960. (mostly from the 1950's) Nothing exciting really. In my last few boxes I've noticed fewer pre 1960 and almost nothing from Canada. This box had only 5 Canadian nickels all post 1981. Weird. Some boxes I get Canadian nickels every other roll.

Going on vacation in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula next week. Will stop at small town banks and ask for halves. I have a good feeling that I'm going to hit it big somewhere small!

So I did some roll searching without going to a bank today. I had ordered $2 in 90% junk silver and the company I ordered from sent me what I DIDN'T want to get, and that was 2 1964, and 2 1964 D JFK halves. Oh well, I was hoping for quarters, dimes, nickels, older halves, or a dollar even. Still look a lot better than "junk".

    I did some number crunching and came up with the following numbers for me;

In terms of the value of silver pulled from $1000 searched, half dollars have yielded $12.78 and dimes have yielded $19.70.

    Troy,

Welcome to CoinTalk ! I am personally glad to have you here due to the fact that as a Lincoln Cent bank box searcher , I have been pulling an increasing number of Canadian Cents & it would be nice to have a resource here that might be able to let us know when we have found something special. I used to find about 8-12 Wheat Cents in a $25.00 bank box but now it seems to have gone down to about 6. However, the number of Canadian Cents have greatly increased to about 15 per box.

Picked up two CWR's and about 12 bucks in loose halves. One 40% in a CWR. The second roll were all 2002 D in mint state. Some are flawless. Nothing but heartache from the loose change.

What is a roll of BU 2002 D Kennedy halves worth? Some of 'em will go MS 65 for sure.

I got 10 CWR cent rolls today. First 6 yielded 2 newer damaged Canadians and not much else. Going to go through all my loose ones and get them off my work table to start quarters next month.

Ok so I was able to get some answers to questions from a district manager for Dunbar coin company here in the northeast. We happened to be at a wedding together this weekend and so I had to pick his brain. However, seeing as we were at a wedding, I kept the "work talk" to a minimum and just asked some questions that I wanted to know.

Here is the skinny of what I learned.

All coins (all denominations) are poured into a large coin sorter which sorts all coins into bags by denomination. Those bags are then put into another machine to roll and box them. He said that while it is not written policy, many of the employees who work the floor will exchange coins that they find with ones that are their own. He said that at the end of the day, if you meet your production numbers and the amount of money matches up, they don't really care if people are pulling coins. He said you would be amazed at some of the stuff they find in there and also commented that when there are large inputs of silver coins you can hear it in the machine and people will often stop to see what it is. Soooooo, they are in fact still pulling silver out of the hoppers. Also, he said at their warehouses they really don't have a "bottom pallet." You won't be getting down to old coins through purchasing a lot of them. He said the more you can get through, the better for looking for coins but they don't have boxes of coins in their warehouse that have been there for a long time.

The other interesting thing he said was that you would be shocked at the coinage scattered on the floor but no one picks it up because of the whole "stealing" thing. He said on occasion, they will sweep the floors and place the coins in miscellaneous bag and stored away.

I'm sure I'll think of some other stuff he told me that I'll post but if I think of anything, I'll post.

That's interesting. Makes me think there really is no such thing as an "unsearched bank roll", even when you get it directly from the bank, lol!

it must be different at the dunbar in my city. my friend has seen many valuable coins, but they do not let them exchange. he has a coworker that either collects or knows about coins. he said the guy seen a very valuable coin worth over $400 and went up to the boss to see if he could make an exception and buy it, even offered to split the money of the coin sale with the boss. still would not do it! i just called him and told him to find out what kinda coin it was, he don't talk to this coworker that much, but they are both sorting now, and will call me on his next break.

actually when he calls me back, i want to confirm something i think he told me some time ago. i THINK he said they are not allowed to bring money into the sorting room. all personal money has to be left in their locker. they also were short a few dollars one time and made everyone stay and searched every inch of the building. they found out one new employee took a few quarters and got some chips or something in the break room vending machine. he ended up getting charged with a ton of stuff. very serious work place!

It'll be interesting to hear what he says. The guy I talked to works in CT but used to work at Loomis, also in CT. He said Loomis was the same way. Again, he said it isn't policy that people can do it, but most managers don't care as long as you are meeting your production numbers and the amount of cash matches with what you was supposed to have.

yea, i am sure most other places do. i have no real knowledge of how different companies like this run and how often they are short money. but it seems his work is always catching a thief! so that is probably why, they don't allow no fun. the suspense is killing me though, i want to know what coin it was. i am guessing he will call around 9, when he gets off.

Picked up about 15 rolls of halfs today, nothing as far as silver. Did get 8 coins towards my circulated (well-circulated) set. Waiting on a box of halves that should arrive on Wednesday, it will be my first.

Finally my streak of finding nothing is over. My last box of halves had 3 40 percenters and 3 proofs. I go get another 2 boxes tomorrow.
