90% Copper 10% zinc. Minted at Philadelphia. Not worth much since these were sold by the Mint for around $6.

Actually it was a very friendly advice, maybe it was just in a rude form. Searching for information by yourself can be very fulfilling and much more interesting than reading few facts brought by someone else.

Getting insights from the forum is great, when you cant find information by yourself, at least that is my approach. First looking in Google, then forum search, then ask for help.

Well, unless you`re in a hurry, then its understandable.

Don't let the rude comments of some spoil your enjoyment of Coin Talk. There are many knowledgeable numismatists on our forum.

    Welcome Magic_carpet.

First what the posters above neglected to ask you was if the medal was a 3" #101 which has been out of stock for quite a while or the 1 5/16 one which is # 801 and is $5.50, whereas the larger medal will again be available according to the mint catalog after 8/3/2010 for $42.00. The obverse of your medal ( no matter which one) was from a bust by Pierre Duvivier, and the reverse by John Reich who is famous for designing many of the early coins. The medals of Jefferson #103 and Lincoln #116 also feature busts familiar to collectors. Many people do collect these.

Hope you continue with us, many have greatly increased their knowledge asking and reading.

    Jim
