Since the US Mint is a profit making enterprise, couldn't they afford to pay some good artists what they're worth?

Hmmm! Fire the director because the CCAC's opinion of the sculptors' abilities to produce quality designs is not what it should be?

how much did the mint make per year for the past 10 years? one would think they could take a small chunk of that and give those people that gave them that profit something more fitting then the warner bros. logo... just my 2 cents...

Folks have missed the boat here.

The US Mint sculptors do what they are told by the Mint Director and Moy's Coin Rennaisance is aimed specifically at People, places, and events. coin designs also do not have the luxury of going from sculptors concept to final design and the simplest avenue is simplicity.

However, on the other hand, they know whats coming down the pike so you'd think they'd at least do some preliminary preparation.

why would they prepare? they already know what they have to draw exists. its not like the mint director is going to go and say draw me LIBERTY since they might have to use an imagination. they just want to mint items that are mass marketable - eye appealing or not. state parks quarters has got to be one of the most bland ideas.

To start with-I don't have any knowledge of the mint and how it runs. Thanks for the brief overview.

Regarding the coins and the bland ideas- The mint has to focus on things that will sell. Do you think they will make more money on a bland 56 National Park quarter set or a smaller (well thought out) 15 coin set? I would guess that they see quantity being a better money maker then quality. They could do both (and I wish they would) but I think they are focused on making $.

I loved the state quarter idea, but come on, I would be annoyed if my state quarter looked like some that were produced.

All government employees are paid based on a predetermined schedule established by law. And that schedule is much less than what is paid in the private sector for the same work.

Here is a doohickey about the SBA Dollar.

House Bill (#12728) calling for the effigy of Susan B. Anthony to be incorporated on the small dollar size coin was passed by a 6-1 vote on July23, 1978, by the Historical Preservation & Coinage Subcommittee of the House Committee on Banking, Finance & Urban Affairs.

Just threw it in, I've never heard of this committee...

I never cared for the SBAs. They were too easily confused with a 1/4. The VFD I was a member of for 25 years paid all their bingo prizes in SBAs in 79. No one wanted them and they brought them up to the desk for greenbacks.

The US Mint could do alot if they simply hired someone as a high ranking consultant the likes of Ron Landis or Daniel Carr. Heck maybe even a couple of these Hobo nickel engravers.:D I'm sure they, Landis or Carr wouldn't want the job as Chief engraver but it's definitely time for change!!

Recent studies have shown that the difference is far less than you think, especially when you calculate the differences in benefits.

That was true in the fifties, but hasn't been true in 20 years. Benefits are ridiculously higher for government employees.

Benefits vary at any workplace. But pretty much any large corporation has benefit packages that match, and sometimes exceed, what govt. offers.

But the salaries don't. Corporate salaries often far exceed govt salaries for similar jobs. Which is why so many govt employees leave govt service once they get good at their jobs. The private sector offers them more money.

We're in different universes. Gov't employees average 127% of private sector equivalents and have benefits FAR exceeding the private sector. It is true you can find higher paying jobs in the private sector, but they are NOT average jobs or equivalent or even for the same work. Government employees often do special favors for businesses just before they leave government service for the private sector. It's called Chicago Style Politics as usual or graft. Take your pick.

I have read the NN article referenced by the op. Many of the posters comments are also right on the money, the first chain cents were loudly decried, the Morgan dollar, the Barber series, all were roundly criticized, the coinage that so many people point to as great designs were more the result of the vision of Teddy Roosevelt, and also it helped that the times were such that neo classical representations were in vogue.

I do agree that committees are guarentees of banality, they also will generally be able to not offend pressure groups.

    Pretty typical.

My team sucks, so lets fire the coach/manager.

I wonder if it has ever occured to any of you that the fault lies in impatience and ridiculous expectations? or maybe your opinions are just without merit?

    See, for example:
    http://www.cato-at-liberty.org/2009/08/24/federal-pay-continues-rapid-ascent/
    and follow-up articles.

I've worked for a number of large corporations in my life, and chances are very good I'll be working for a large corporation again later this year. I've never gotten the health care nor retirement benefits offered to federal workers. While salaries at large corporations can and do exceed government salaries in the management and executive ranks, when one looks beyond large companies to the overall private sector you see a different story.

Nor do "so many" federal employees leave government service, at least until after their government pension vests. The average "years in service" for Federal Employees is far higher than that of even large public sector companies.
