Has anyone found any good coins on the ground?

We've all been walking at some point and have found cents, nickels, etc on the ground. Have you ever found anything good just laying in the street?

Last weekend my wife and I parked at a store and got out of the car. She looked down and said "Oh, a dime". She picked it up and it turned out to be a silver dime! A little beat up, of course, from laying in a parking lot, but still a neat find.

i go on 2, 3 mile walks a day with my dog. i find at least a cent on the ground every day. i never even found a wheat cent. the oldest thing i found was a '65 dime.

my dog had a good find though.. this past winter, when that huge snow storm dumped a few feet of snow, i decided to walk the dog. we were just walking down the main street and she stuck her head deep down in the snow and came up with 2, $20 bills!

i let her sniff around that spot some more, but we didn't get anything else. i made sure she got some new toys and treats..

No, the coins were always pretty usual stuff. But I found a $100 one time. It had been stepped on and pushed into soft ground. I saw 1 corner and thought it was one of those business cards from a payday lender or something like that. I picked it up anyway, and nearly fell over when I unfolded it and saw it was genuine !

In the fourth grade, I found a 1901 O dime when digging in the dirt at school. That find initiated my interest in coins. I still have the dime.

I found a hundred dollar bill and thirteen singles in an eyeglass case outside a baseball card shop a long time ago.

I thought this was about coins. I have found several $20 bills. Once I found a lottery ticket worth $35.

Just this morning I found my first large cent with my detector in a lot that they are clearing for a new Lowes store here in Albany NY.When I found it you could see the wreath on the back but the face was pretty pitted but it was a braided hair 1840 to 1857 made the 184- could read read the last didget but now we are heading out there in the am with a few more people to scour the area.

    congratulations!

just think, if you never found it, that coin could have easily been in the dirt for the next 100+ years(depending on the building).

hope you have more luck in a few hours. maybe some bank robber dropped his loot running from the law in the 1800's!

This thread just dug up some memories for me which I had almost forgotten. I had to dig into my seperate childhood coin collection to remember exactly what is was but about 20 years ago when riding bikes around with a friend of mine I found what after some quick research appears to be a Swedish 1976 mint set or birth year set in a somewhat homemade looking 6 coin plastic case containing a 5 Kronor, 1 Kronor, 50 Sverige, 25 Sverige, 10 Sverige and 5 Sverige in uncirculated condition. Even looking at it today I can't imagine how it ended up on the side of a road in Marietta, Ga... ?

I just found a 2010 shield cent in the bottom of my washer a little bit ago. Does that count at "cleaned"?

Btw, I got that cent in change about a week or so ago; it's the only shield cent I've gotten in circulation so far. They do seem to be around though finally.

My best ground find was not one of my own, but I had a close friend that found an 1854 Type II One Dollar gold piece. We had no idea that it was a type II, but found out later. It was still in a collectors 2X2 cardboard holder, but was bent about 20 degrees almost in the center of the coin. It was a very strong MS coin other than the bend. It was bent so that if you set it down on a surface the top of the obverse would stand up just a little higher than the surface. He asked me if I could help him sell the coin, because I was a collector, so I called the coin shop I always bought errors from, told them what we had and asked if they would look at it. They were shocked to see that it was a type II and said that "Someone was going to be upset when they found that they had dropped it" and that the coin could be repaired fairly well, but it lower the grade because the bend would always show. They offered me $250 but I had no idea what it was worth, so I asked. They said that if it didn't have the bend, the Grey Sheet price was over $1000. A quick call to my friend and he said $250 was fine. He even gave me half the money for helping sell the coin.

I'm sure that everyone involved in this find was happy, but I do feel sorry for the guy that dropped it!

I seem to have alot of luck lately.Found a 1936 cent in very fine shape yesterday.Over the last few years have found alot of wheat cents from the 30 s.My favorite find was a 1953 cent.Saw it heads up on the ground and was shiny and very very red.Thought it was a 1990s coin. When I turned it over and saw the wheat ears I was in shock.
