Sorry to be so naive - but do we have ANY proof that they truly exist, or are they an Urban Legend that will go on and on like the 1944 steel penny I have?

If they do exist I am surprised that they haven't surfaced overseas. Does the US prosecute people for holding illegal foreign coins?

I spoke with Wong and Fidel and no Chris there is no Chevy parts left. Wong told me to call the International Numismatic Theft and Recovery Office with headquarters in Beijing. Ask to speak to Joe and he will call his Mexican buddies who have Korean contacts. You see the Chinese make them and sell them to Fidel
and he sends them to Mexico who sells them to Korea and Korea has the contacts with the Home Shopping Channel.

I think there is a different situation between it and the 1933 $20 pieces. Theoretically there was a chance that the 33 was available for a short while at the mint window and one could trade $20 of gold coins for one. Whereas the 1964D was under the greatest scrutiny and accounting ever given to a melt. Any that did appear would most likely be by accident such as widow of a mint worker finds it in the SDB, but with no note saying don't let anyone know you have this valuable coin. Under current legislation I think it will stay illegal, that any were obtained from the mint by illegal means. IMO.

Why were these coins made anyway? Was the government still reissuing old silver $1 coins and then made these because they were running low (sort of like the 1999 SBA dollars)? In other words, what was the sudden reason for minting dollar coins after years of not making any?

from what i gather it was a big mess of some people wanting the dollar coin back for the booming casino's business, like las vegas. others apposed it, but the president had them start minting them in denver, before the first few hundred thousand were released, congress overrode the president and the coins that were minted were to be melted. if i remember right, there was supposed to be just over 300,000 minted.

my mother was not even born yet, so i was definitely not around for this. i am going by memory of what i read a while ago, so someone correct me if am wrong..

not only does the US Secret Service hunt down, confiscate and melt these coins, but they have no concept of national borders or sovereignty in their pursuits. It is their contention that these coins are US Government property and if any surface, they will not allow them to be privately owned.

For that reason alone, the ones that do exist, do so entirely underground and although I am certain that they exist somewhere, we will never see one until the US Government gives up the ghost and allows private ownership of the extant specimens.

You're thinking of Wong Wei, not to be confused with Tu Wong.

I have no idea where Wong and Infidel went! Now I am out my order of Cuban Cigars Chris and my Peace dollars Numismatist47! Maybe the government caught up to them and they will spend time in Fidel's exclusive club Guantuamono Bay!

Wong Wei is the half-brother of Yu Wong Wei Wei.

To err is human. Yu Wong Wei Wei is unforgiveable.

You guys can't find them because you are looking for 1964 Peace dollars.

They used the Morgan design at the last minute because Lyndon Johnson
didn't want the word "Peace" on a US coin during the Vietnam war.

I have read before that they had wanted to ( at some stage)use the Morgan design, but that there was no usable dies or plasters, etc. to do that. All eye witnesses to the accounting and melting refer to it as a Peace dollar.

i don't see the big deal, why would the government go through all that trouble for a coin? to me its a waste of time and money to send an agent to confiscate the coin, if one popped up.
