I bought this coin awhile back cause I thought it looked nice and I didn't know anything at all about St Augustine. Anyone know anything about this coin? It's from St Augustine Florida which is the oldest city in the US. Something I never knew until I went to google. Anyone know the rarity, mintage or any other info? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Augustine,_Florida
sorry i can't be of help, but i really like it. i am sorta embarrassed that i did not know that st augustine was the oldest city in the us. you taught me something new.:thumb:
Yeah I was a bit embarrassed as well. The coin is hard to find info on but I'm guessing they sold them at festivity time in St Augustine. Hopefully someone from the area will chime in here. I found a St Augustine Medal. http://www.globe-treasures.com/page4.html BTW, the coin is reeded and is around the size of a Kennedy half dollar, looks like silver but it could be sterling, I just don't know yet.
Your "coin" is a medal, too! You might try searching one of the private mints that produce a lot of medals like Medallic Art Co., Danbury Mint, Franklin Mint, etc. Chris
I live in St. Augustine. I would say there is a good chance that they sell this coin at the fort on the obverse (Castillo de san Marcos). There is an extremely interesting history of the 400th anniversary in 1965 of St. Augustine. Martin Luther King basically held the town hostage until his demands were meant.
