I was wondering if any of the Peace Dollar experts have come across a 1923 Peace
with a High Relief Strike like this one?
Belongs to a friend of mine and when I saw it the relief on it was very surprising.

Looks completely normal to me. There are several dates of Peace dollars that have good strikes.

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

Just looks like a well-struck specimen to me.

    Thanks guys I appreciate it
I have just not run across any well struck Peace Dollars
especially the reverse on the ones I have seen
United States Of America and E Pluribus Unum
    is always very mushy
    Except the 1921

Right on. That Peace looks very well struck.

I think on a number of coins it is harder to get good strikes on the reverse and I tend to look at the reverse first to check the strike. To me the strike is the most important part of the coin's value. If it is minted poorly it will always be an unattractive coin, regardless of the grade.

    FYI:
There were high relief 1922's struck, but they are extremely scarce...
    dare I say rare.

Even I would say rare for that one !

agreed, but as we both know, the word 'rare' is the most overused and mis-used word in coins.

right after eBay descriptions of 'Gem'.

    MArshall:
    Thanks for posting, interesting.

but, how long could it have taken Sheldon for these:

    Three Known..................- 3 Known
    Semi Unique..................- 2 Known
    Unique..........................- 1 Known

He could have used a little thought process and come up with something interesting, like:

Mine, His & Yours Known..................- 3 Known
Mine and Yours ..................- 2 Known
    I Want It! ..........................- 1 Known

To me rare is something with 10 or less examples known.

Pulled the 23 Peace back out and shot some close-ups of some of the normally
more mushy parts of the Peace Dollars.

P.S. My German Shepard came over to the desk wanting a little attention
while shooting this. Did not notice the hair on the UNITED Shot
until after I uploaded it. LOL

Some diagnostics on high relief obv. and rev. , of 1922 , not 1923. I agree it is a nicely struck 1923 Peace.

To be totally honest, some of these were modifications of his original scale which was:

    R8 Non-collectible <4
    R7 Extremely Rare 4-12
    R6 Very Rare 13-30
    R5 Rare 31-75
    R4 Very Scarce 76-200
    R3 Scarce
    R2 Not So Scarce
    R1 Common

    Desertgem,

Thanks for the link, The diagnostics discussed really put it clear
in my head on what to look for when looking for a 1922 High relief
I have heard about them for years. But never quite knew
the differences in the die characteristics between High and low relief

    Thanks Again
