I had $227 of loose ones my wife threw in a jar over the years. I pulled the best ones and re-rolled the duplicates. No Silver of course and turned them in. I didn't know about all the varieties when I did it. DUH. I hope if I put something good out there, you guys are the ones to find it.

So in an effort to redeem my bad box today I went to a bank I've been to 4 times so far (including today). 3 of the 4 times I found silver so I definitely redeemed myself. I did better in 10 rolls than I did in 50. I found 4 more 2010s, 3 D's and a P. I need more P's I have like 3 sets and a bunch of D's. Weird because I live in NJ. I also got a 2004 and a 74 S! I thought the 74 looked funny, the rims were thicker and it just had a different appearance, and upon closer inspection the mintmark appeared to be an S not a mucked up D like I thought! Pretty good compared to the $500 I did earlier. I think I'm going to stick to this bank, 3/4 is pretty good to me.

To get ink off of a coin you want to use:

Put some hair spray on a Q-tip and gently rub the ink away. Rince with distilled water.

    This works quite well.

$500 in halves and nada in terms of silver. Did get a 2009 P and a 1998 D that looks like a proof... really weird.

I would grab a shopping cart and a cardboard box and move to their front porch. That way I could search them right there ! I haven't seen silver in so long I went back to cents for a break.

Cents are kinda fun because you'll almost always find several wheats in a box... gives more thrill to the hunt.

Finished the next box of halves and nothing again. That is 2 1/2 boxes with absolutley nothing. Not a good way to start my roll searching experience. I hope it gets better soon.

    Went threw 2 boxes of halves today and I found 3 40% silver halves, a 1987 S, 2002 P, 2004 P, and a 2007 P.

That and you have greater chance to find an error or variety. Besides, I need to re-adjust my eyes from time to time. Sometimes I do nickles for the heck of it, but since my folders are complete, not often.

I don't think I will ever spot an error unless the coin jumps up and hits me in the face. I guess I don't know what I'm looking for no matter how many sites, threads, and books I read. I could have found 500 half errors today, and I could have just wrapped them all back up to take back to the bank. I'll never know. Call me naive.

Oh and Gary my Dad asked me if I wanted to go through them in the parking lot before we left so I could take them back in! I think I'm just going to go back tomorrow to get another batch. This keeps me occupied. Or maybe I'll try another bank. Hmm

    Slamster17,

Any coin that has the ability to:
    1.) jump up
2.) hit you in the face

Is a very special coin and better than any error or variety you will ever find :)

If I get more dime boxes like the one I had recently, I may do a lot more of those... especially given the ease of finding dimes since they're rolled in clear plastic, not paper.

Heck , it was worth checking since the 1878 8TF ( 8 tail feather ) can bring a small premium.
There appear to be a variety of 1878 Morgan varieties. Have you checked all of the mint marks on the reverses of your Morgans ? There are some dates in your collection that could be Carson City minted. So look for any that have the CC mint mark.

    Hey Train,

What's the most efficient way of opening those plastic rolls? I just got a box of pennies wrapped with that----it's the first time I've seen that type of wrapper---but I haven't tried opening one yet. Do they pop open when you rap them on the edge of a counter like a paper roll, or do you have to cut them open with a sharp instrument (like a knife)?

Ehh, I've just kinda been sliding them out.. Just grab about 1/5 of the way in, push down with your nail and they kinda slide out the end... I don't wanna use a sharp object, lest I scratch that 1909 S VDB I'm bound to find if I search enough. :p

Many of the penny boxes I get come in those plastic tube wraps. The best way to open them is to bend them right in the middle with both hands and then they slide right out.
