Ok so i saw the other thread about the worst dealer you've ever been offered so whats the best deal you've ever been offered? Mine was at the CSNS show earlier this year, i snagged an 1843 Seated quarter for the opening bid of $900, (paid about a grand for it after buyers fee) it books for well over that price and had a population of 10:6.
I bought an Indian Head coin book missing only the 1908-S and 1909-S cents for $62.50 at an auction. With a 1877 at G-4, I figured the book was worth nearly a grand.
It was not in an offered deal, but a local antique store had a holiday sale, 20% off, I was able to buy silver rounds at about 3 dollars under spot, I am still new enough in the hobby that I have not yet got that wow what a great deal experience, tho I feel most of the deals I have been involved in have been "fair".
As founder of the worst deal thread, I have also had many great deals. Just last month I got an entire roll of proof silver Texas quarters for $111. Way under spot, plus these are worth more than spot. win win
Well - no offense intended - but auctions are really not offered. I mean heck I won an auction at 105 and sold for 1500 - but it was a cherry pick, not really something offered to me. The best I can offer up is the local dealer always gives me between 5-10% off. Just depends on the coin and the price. I distinquish between a good deal from a seller and winning an auction. Sometimes you just get lucky and nobody else bids - while still a deal, not really offered. More like you earned it versus dealer(or seller) offered it to you. I recall another dealer (and on ebay) who sold me PCGS 69 silver eagle for $21. Can't remember if it was PR or MS. He had extra's and wanted to unload them. He offered one to something like the last 10 bidders over spot at there max bid price. Very cool. Now if I was offered that IHC collect for $400 - that would be a nice offer.
I was offered 20 large cents for $100. The guy said they all were in superb condition. I never got a look at them because I told him I didn't have the money. The moral of this story is, the guy had a history of being a thief. I wanted no part of it...
I would say my dealer has given me a great number o wonderful deals. The first one that comes to mind is an 1870 $3 gold in vf that was offered to me for $500 because of a rim bump.
This goes back several years but you asked for the best ever... Right around 1996 the Internet was young and a collector I know was selling off some coins on the net. He offered the first pick to the members of an internet coin club to which we both belonged. I looked through his listings and came upon a 1932-D Washington in Fine. The "Coin Prices" price for the coin was $30-35 but the friend had it listed for $3. I asked him if he was sure about the price to which he said, "It says $3?" I replied in the affirmative and he said "then it's $3." I still have the coin today and I marvel at my 32-D in F that I bought for $3.
Picked up a 1959 P Proof Washington quarter and a 1960 D uncirculated Washington quarter .99 cents each plus $3.00 shipping Also picked up a 1935 S Washington quarter uncirculated for .99 cents plus $3.50 shipping as well as a 1976 S proof 40% silver Eisenhower dollar for $1.50 plus $1.00 shipping
The dealer I work with the most has given me a couple of good deals. One that stands out is the national banknote he looked up in front of me... it retailed for $100 so he offered to buy it from me at $100. I asked him how he was going to make money and he said, "Well, I kinda like the notes from those border towns." I know this guy had made money off me, but he sure doesn't flaunt it.
best offer I ever got was a 2007 Dime with a Die Crack down the reverse for free.. I sold it but the best offer because it was free.
Best deals? Interesting thread. I have cherrypicked a number of good deals. they include: #11 (yes 11) 1864 L Indians cents purchased as No L. #3 1905 O, Micro O Barber Dimes. and one 1921 Standing Liberty quarter with the last digit showing clearly, purchased in junk silver. But the best ever was a 1909 S VDB purchased as a 1909 S, now sitting in an NGC slab F-12.
Had a local dealer offer me an 1877 IHC in VF for about $100. It's been a few years but the deal was just too good and I turned it down. Just had this feeling that something was wrong. A few weeks later the dealer makes the local news. Him and his wife went to jail. It seems his better customers were getting late night visits from guys with guns and bats. Several people were hurt really bad. The dealers shop was filled with stolen coins. I have always thought if I had said yes to this deal I would have been killed or killed one of them. That's about the time I started using a SDB for anything of value. At the end, there was a large auction. The shop and the property were sold so he could pay his lawyers. The auction was really cool. Folks were hardly bidding and most coins went for almost nothing near the real value. Most everyone there knew how bad this guy was. Maybe some justice was server in the end. It was a great lesson for me.
I'm not sure if it was an "offer" or not, but I purchased a raw 1889 gold dollar on eBay for AU money. It was subsequently graded MS 65 by PCGS.
Went to Stack's on 57th in NYC back in the early 70's to look ,not to buy, dealer says your the first customer today,I said"just looking ,thinking about a Double Eagle type coin" ,so he says sit down & shows me some outrageous coins way to much for my budget,he then realizes I'm not going to buy & says I have a Raw EF-45 Double Eagle for $315 ! I bought it & submitted it to ICG (20 years later)& it comes back MS-50,just one of the good deals way back then .
Is that a new grade? :goofer: 22 pre-1965 Washingtons (mostly 40's and 50's), 5 SLQ's (4 dateless, 1 1927), 1 dateless Barber $69 shipped
