It doesn't look natural to me. It's almost like it is painted on the surface, and the color is "off" and kind of flat. But, what do I know! Chris
IMO, as photos are hard to judge, it is market unacceptable. My reason is that the coin appears too worn to produce that type of toning, There are some color progression problems, but all in all, MU. Jim
For me this looks like it´s AT or environmental damage, Colours seem to light like they are floating Some info Go to the bottom of this page and you can see some hinters on spotting AT or ED coins http://rg.ancients.info/guide/toning.html
If you mean my "strange", artificial, then yes it is. The problem with toned ASE's is that the coins start with no numismatic value. Their value is purely intrinsic so they are the perfect choice for a coin doctor. The coins are plentiful and if the experiment goes bad the coin doctor can simply dip the coin and move on having experienced absolutely no financial risk. On the other hand, if they can produce a questionably toned coin that would bring even a modest premium, they have already made a profit. The proposition of AT'ing ASE's is a win-win scenario for a coin doctor. Because of this, every toned ASE should be heavily scrutinized by potential buyers. IMO, buying toned ASE's for premium prices is more dangerous than the toned Peace Dollar market.
Pilkenton, is the background of your last set of photos really that color or is the balance off? I expect that is a little "whiter" than it appears. Yes, a BU walker can have toning colors similar to the Morgans, but like Morgans, you don't expect to see this type of toning on examples that are not AU55 or better. Walkers are also fine coins for AT proponents to use, as there are many sliders ( AU 58/BU ) available and they are relatively inexpensive in that grade. The devices ( Walker, eagle, sun, etc.,are quite raised from the background and differential staining contrast can produce impressive coins, AT or NT, quite similar to the ASE.IMO. Jim
The picture is close. There's nothing white on the coin except around rim. The eagle is that dirty brown color.
It looks like something a coin doctor would put in an eBay auction. I'd say no NT, and I wouldn't dare say Market Acceptable, I can't see a TPG slabbing that. That coin looks AT to me.
IMHO the Walker is AT all day long. I just haven't seen those colors on Walkers. I love the series and I love toning, but I just don't think it's natural.
I agree, very strongly smells like AT. I haven't seen anything lower than AU50 that was nicely Naturally toned. But tons of G4 - VF20 AT'd coins. Although I do remember buying a folder of quarters earlier in the year, and all of the LOW LOW grade earlier silver coins all had similar toning to that, as if someone else showed me I would say it was AT instantly. So that shows you to take my opinion on toned conis with a grain of salt.
Most of you guys say AT, but most of you are a little edgy about it...doesn't think it's AT, but not certain. My gut says it's AT. For what I paid for it it must be. But from I'm hearing from you is that it's a pretty good job of artificial toning. Anyway, it's up on ebay now. I was honest and said I wasn't certain about the toning.
