I found a 1968 Jefferson Nickel without a mint mark and could not find it in the red book. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this error for this coin type?
That's what I thought too at first. Honestly, you should check it out! There is no Philadelphia minted or no-mint-mark coin listed in the red book for the 1968 Jefferson Nickel.
I have no clue about nickels, but if it's a Redbook error then PCGS price guide is also in error as they don't list a '68 from P either. My guess would be struck through.
There are also none listed on PCGS site or the Numismedia site. However, my 2008 Red Book lists the following under the 1968-D and 1968-S lines; ........100,396,004 That is the entire line. BTW, my 2000 and 1972 Red Books also show the same thing and all show similar entries for 1969 and 1970 also.
Yes I have seen them before. What you have is a polished/filled die that has caused the D or S mintmark to disappear. The same thing that caused the 1922 no D cent. However it has never been widely publicized/hyped and most people don't know about it. You can also find the same thing with 1969 and 1970 nickels. Unfortunately since it has never been hyped it has no real value. (1922 cents with no mintmark big bucks, 1968 nickel with no mintmark pocket change. Why?)
Thanks! This was very helpful. Too bad its not worth "big bucks." I knew of the 1922 plain cent and was hoping I'd stumbled across something really special. Oh well, I'll probably still hang onto it as it's still really unique, but at this point it's probably not worth getting slabbed.
The Jefferson's did't have a P mint mark till 1980 with the war nickels being the exception. Nothing to get excited about cause all the 1946-1979 no P cause they didn't have them till 1980. Check the red book to be sure.
I've checked the red book and that is precisely why I started the discussion thread. I know that similar errors created the 1922 plain cent and the 1937 D 3-legged buffalo nickel. I just wasn't sure if anyone had ever seen this for the 1968 Jefferson nickels.
i am putting together a circulated set of jeffersons and found one in a roll. it confused me at first to. people are getting confused thinking its just a normal philly mint. in 1968 and 1969 jefferson nickels only were minted with the "D" and "S" mm. from '65-'67 mint marks were suspended so those years had no mm's at all. i really wish the hype would catch on!
It would be like cornering the market of sand. With all the Philly ones being the same for those years, that is just the way it is. Nothing to catch on.
Me too! Thanks for understanding and clarifying what I was trying to say. I wonder how common this error is? Judging from Conder101's post above, it sounds like it's found on 1968-1970 Jefferson nickels.
Thanks Panda. I've never noticed that before for that year. I was looking through the whole series and missed that one point about the 1968. No wonder this thread I felt was going no where. Now I see.
no problem, its the same with the 1969. and i believe 1965-1967, there were no mint marks at all. i didn't know this either, but i am building a found in circulation set of jeffersons. just found a 43-P and 43-S war nickels!
It probably happens in other years as well, but those other years have production in Philadelphia and a missing D (no S mint nickels for circulation after 1970) would just look like a Philadelphia coin and not be noticed. But 1968, 69, and 70 nickels with no mintmark SHOULD be noticed because there were no Philadelphia nickels in those years.
