this was a PMG graded VF(25) note I saw on eBay today ...

This is a PMG graded 25 which I have in my collection (I had this graded back in April of this year)

Here is the back of the above note

I realize that PMG must have had good reasons to grade my note a 25 (very light nearly invisible folds) ... but i just dont see how my clean nice looking note grades the SAME as the obviously well worn (dirty) note at the top

Which "VF25" note would you rather own?

I wonder if the grade your note gets depends on which schmo is on duty that day?

there has got to be something wrong with a grading "system" that gives the $20 Gold note at the top the same grade as my note.

maybe there needs to be an added degree of freedom in the grading system for eye appeal (or something similar).

Well the FR224 should be re-submitted (IMO) 25 is almost an insult on such a nice note ! I don't understand how that could have graded that low !

thanks for that conner -- well either mine is too low or the Gold $20 is too hight

as for the apple vs oranges comments ... why? ... just because it's two different notes? ... i am just talking about the wrinkles and dirt ...
    i dont get your point!

Why? Because in the OP you framed the offer to choose between two different notes based on their grade, which cannot be graded for the same reasons nor compared for their differences let alone the reasons that got each note the grade they received. I didn't agree with your plea for leniency in grading between two different notes either. The OP excludes buyers solely for aesthetic reasoning or those adding to a Series in their collection irrespective of TPG grades. In the OP it doesn't matter that one note may have been misgraded and needs to be resubmitted. That's not what you asked, or at least it didn't translate that way to me in the way you presented it. If someone gave a response for which note based on the way the OP was framed around choosing a note based on the grade, they are buying the plastic and not the note.

The 1187 is a nice, original VF. Yours, on the otherhand, is either undergraded based on appearance of the scan, or is a pressed and cleaned VF (although it does not appear to be).

How many folds does it have?

As far as grading these notes differently, that is hogwash. Notes are different than coins, and for the most part can be graded according to the same standards.

my first thought is that the gold cert. is overgraded.

I think that sometimes it depends on who sends the note in, I think that along with market grading there is also probably customer grading. It might be better if you are thinking of submitting a note (or coin) for grading to find a shop or dealer who submits lots of coins, rather than to try it yourself. I base this on the number of collectors who have submitted items for grading and sometimes not only get undergraded, but sometimes the slab does not even get the date of the coin right.

Looking at both notes equally it,s hard to tell by the scan why yous received
A VF-25 it appears much better then the gold certificate especially the back!!

Notes can be messed with that is not able to be seen in a photo. That could be some of the reason the educational note graded the same.
