It's funny you/your girlfriend should refer to this as "coin drama." I spent the weekend with my non-coin brother while doing the Tukwila/Seattle show and was explaining the scenario to him as well. He got a good laugh at all the "drama" and thought this guy was behaving very "high schoolish." I was very disappointed in how he went about trying to be the one to get recognition instead of being more professional by simply phoning or emailing or pm'ing Brian and/or Kevin without bringing it to the public message boards first. But as I said above, I don't believe any of this should have ever been about who gets recognition, but should have been ONLY about finding, identifying, and discussing the new/different die variety. That's the important thing here.
So the other guy apologized. That's really cool of him, he needed to. He went over the top. I'm sure many here followed it all. Now this thread gets started with words to pick on the guy and he is called "high schoolish"? I'm sorry Charmy but I see nothing professional about this on anyones part. Guess I won't be the most welcome person at your booth at the next show but that's my honest opinion. It was such a cool thing to get covered with all the baggage.
Idhair, you are right in that I probably should have laid low on this, and I did to some extent, but there is much more to this story and this guy than what has been published. But let me just say that this isn't his first time jumping to erroneous conclusions and lashing out, and the apology was NOT his idea. And yes I am quite frustrated that such an innocent variety "discovery" and ensuing discussions would get all clouded with such self-serving and needless PUBLIC accusations just because someone who didn't follow through with something didn't get any attention. IMHO, that is high schoolish. And no worries about being given the evil eye the next time I see you at a show, it will be quickly followed by a warm smile and a full glass of wine!
I agree I always learn something new or reminds me of a fact that I had forgot! but Charmy keep up the great wok you do!:thumb:
Here is an update by Kevin Flynn after he had a chance to compare my 1909 MPL to the other guy's coin - he feels they both were made from the same dies, with the reverse being the newly discovered die. Again, my thanks to Kevin and Brian for doing all the research and work to share their knowledge and enhance our understanding of coins. They are both amazing men and scholars, and I am grateful to them both. (THANKS LEADFOOT, I corrected my link too! http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=30&threadid=772338
Charmy, Thanks for the update! I think you meant to give this link: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=30&threadid=772338
Congratulations Charmy. It never stops amazing me on the uality and rarity of coins that you have. Every time I see one of your posts, I make sure and stop and read it because I learn something new every time.
I have the black amd white closeup photos of the diagnostics that Kevin took but they are in the wrong format and I'm not able to download them to Photobucket so I can post them and I don't know how to convert them. I'm still working on getting them changed.
Charmy, did you ever get any updated photos of your coin and it's diagnostics? Would love to see them.
I did get close up photos of the diagnostics taken by Kevin Flynn but they are not in the correct format and I am not able to post them.
Finally, thanks to Robec, I can post some of Kevin Flynn's diagnostics of this new 1909 MPL variety!! Obverse: Heavy die scratch from left bottom of N of IN to center of N. Several vertical die scratches above IN GOD. Several small die scratches between GO of GOD. Several small die scratches in field below second T of TRUST. Heavy die scratch from left bottom of T of LIBERTY through the R. Reverse: Die scratch from M of UNUM left into the field above E of ONE. Horizontal die scratch in field to the right of the C of CENT. Die scratch from the center of E to the N of CENT. Die scratch through the middle of UN of UNITED. Small over large TE of UNITED, ST of STATES, F of AMERICA, and and ME of AMERICA. Die scratch through the lower TAT of STATES. Die chip next to the rim at 3'oclock.
It was exciting to see the new diagnostics. Thank you, Charmy for showing them. Was the obverse new as well, or just the reverse?
Now to bring this thread back to life, does anyone know where the article can be found? The link in the original post no longer works
