I altered the photo. It might look something like this in a photograph (not a scan). This is just for fun. I think it is questionably toned (or quickly toned). I have a couple in my collection that are also questionably toned. I have paid several dollars over melt because I thought they were attractive. To me, this one is not that attractive and I would not consider it for the asking price of $75. Just my opinion.....

I put in a offer on it.......I will say however I am not gonna pay too much over spot because this guy would be making out like a bandit over a spat between two people. so if he excepts my offer than its a deal with one stipulation.

the $50 you pay me has to be all dimes:bigeyes:

I'd say NT - that could happen over 15 years in a folder, exposed to air. I kinda like the toning in the lighter photo, but not what is commonly seen on ASE's. People tend to keep them bright white, like they did with 20th century coins back before the 1980's.

What makes you think this piece is at? I would actually bet that it is not. ASE's tone rather quickly when kept in the right conditions. They are not always toned in an appealing fashion which seems to be the case here.

It looks like someone tried to replicate the Tid-E-Bowl toning that you sometimes see on Morgan dollars. Both NGC and PCGS have gotten very tough on toners, and the red/brown would not be acceptable to either company.

Well if you put in an offer over just over spot, the bet is off completely. There is no way you will win that ugly thing. That seller will probably get offended at your offer.

Okay lets go by your original post. Your not gonna pay too much over spot.
By not knowing what your price is, we are really splitting hairs.

Although I can't say that I care too much, you pay whatever you'd like, I'll just wait until you lose this bet.

Guys, I think it is starting to get a little irrational. Notice that the OP hasn't commented on anyone's comments since. There are several good points that anyone reading this thread later should read, regarding the difficulty/impossibility of determining AT/NT unless one knows for sure the history of the coin. Then there is the point of market acceptable vs. market unacceptable (QT, etc.) All well taken. I don't want emotions to overtake reason. When bets concerning money, etc. come along, some may not be able to play in that game. If you want a bet, make the challenge not money, but finding a similar coin in Heritage or any ebay auction with a slabbed representative, etc. That accomplishes the same " I win " or " I don't win", and would contribute more to learning than just betting. This appears to be headed towards someone having bad feelings about the process. Time to ease off.

    Jim,

The bet was only really directed at Dimefreak and I know that he can afford a $200 bet. I do respect his desire not to give the seller that much money however. Hopefully Dimefreak can negotiate a deal with the seller and we can procede with the wager.

It looks natural to me, however I doubt the tpg's would grade it without calling it AT.

Sorry professor Doug, I will try my best to learn from your expertise on nature.

That is absolutely right and I agree but for that guy (what's his name) who said 98% NT goes to show you how much he knows. The coins do toned easily and maybe professor Doug can explain why "nature" does such things to these series but I still don't believe this coin to be NT. The colors on the sorry picture looks as if it was heated and just grabbed 2 ugly colors. I don't think any TPG would give it a grade because the coin IMO is not appealing or "Market Acceptable."

Someone also mentioned they know where to grab another coin similar to that one and that they know how the toning happened then that to me is just another lead on why I believe it to be AT. Now I wonder who's cooking?

I said I know how it toned, because I have been watching it tone for the past year & a half at a dealers shop.you have a poor attitude and your witch hunting will not get you anywhere.I believe it is natural,as I have purchased tens of thousands of toned coins.unlike you.:hammer:

There's 2 different issues - is it AT or NT ? And is it market accpetable or not ?

Neither one has anything to do with the other. We all know that there are AT coins in slabs and we all know that plenty of NT coins have been bagged. So what, it's certainly nothing new for some of the TPG's to be inconsistent to the extreme.

The original question was whether the coin was AT or NT. Honestly, I think that's been answered, it's NT or cetainly appears to be. Whether or not it would be slabbed doesn't have anything to do with it.

The most ardent fans, and the most outspoken detractors of the TPGs should realize that just because a TPG says so, that does not mean that is so - with the possible exception of authenticity. And as we all know, there are even exceptions to that !

And Rigo - how do you heat up just 1 side of a coin ? I'm afraid it can't be done. But I will agree, it does "look" like some heated coins I have seen. But then that's why they were heated to begin with - because heat toning often "looks" like real toning.

It is far better to keep your mind open and consider the wide ranging possibilites than it is to base your decision on "looks". Looks can be deceiving. But I admit, sometimes that's all we have to go by.
