I received an unanticipated tax refund check, which was the result of a mistake
that I made on my federal income tax form.

(Look up "zero percent capital gains" for an explanation)

This was a message to go buy some coins so I went to a local coin show this weekend.

I usually collect foreign (non-US) coins, but this coin attracted me.

It has to be California! Where else would you find anyone who would turn their back on a wild bear.

The California commem is one of the most beautiful American coins.

Nice pickup! I'm not a fan of most commems, but I do enjoy the California one.

Nice pickup! I like the luster.

Does anyone know the original issue price on these older commems (just curious).

    $1 ... wow

I'll take 100 of every issue please

Although in all fairness $1 was worth a lot more back then ... and once we got into the 1930's people were more concerned with eating than collecting coins

I own two of this beautiful coins. Bought my first one, raw ChBU 15 years ago and another one PCGS MS-64 last year. Love the design!

That $1.00 issue price quoted was just for this commem.
But as it turns out it was the issue price for most 50¢ commems.
And often they didn't sell out so dealers/investors could buy large quantities for much less than that (65¢?).
THEN whatever was left over was melted so existing quantity doesn't equal issue quantity.
