After much searching, I finally got a decent chain cent. 1793 S-2 EAC VG-8 provenance EAC 2005 auction lot 83. I'll try to put better pictures using a camera, rather than scanner from my printer. And yes, you can actually see the date.
Depends - you can find some of these in 4 figures, but they rapidly jump to 5. You can see some here for sale.
10-15k$, but don't tell my wife :secret: FYI, the population for a S-2 is R.4+ => ~100 coins. My guess is that this coin is in the middle of the population.
I'll definitely join the other members in congratulating you, Cringely. A very beautiful (and scarce) coin. In my recollection, your specimen is probably the best preserved of the 4-5 Chain Cents posted by C.Ters over the last few years. Please do post larger pictures. Eduard.
My guess would be higher like 25-35 but that's not based on sales. There just seems to be so many lower or counterfeit that I suspect you have a scarcer grade of S-2.

There are 5 varieties of chain cents: S-1 has the rev with AMERI. rather than AMERICA The rest have AMERICA on the reverse with different obverses. S-1 (AMERI.) is R.4 .....[116 - 160 known] S-2 has the numbers in 1 7 9 3 widely spaced and is R.4+ .....[76 - 115 known] S-3 has the numbers in 1793 closely spaced and is R.3- .....[probably 300-500 known] S-4 has a period after the 1793 and is R.3 .....[201- 500 known] NC-1 has the obverse L I B E R T Y widely spaced and is considered non-collectable with an R.8 rarity. .....[2 known] It's interesting that, while the S-2 is the rarest of the four collectable chain cent varieties, there is a significant premium for an S-1, with the S-1 costing at least twice as much as an equivalent S-2. Both S-1 and S-2 were made during Feb 27 - March 1, 1793 when the fledging US Mint coined a total of 11,178 large cents.
Great looking coin. Just a little out of my price range since I am trying to put a decent MPL set together but what a great looking coin. Cant wait to see the better pics
Wow ! Sincere congratulations ! A Chain cent is a rite of passage. The holy Grail of early copper type.
