    Hey guys,

Is it a good thing if the tellers to whom I have spoken frequently about coins over the past few days have taken down my number and said they would call me when they get new coins?

They also offered to special order boxes of half dollars...

Is this a good thing to have, a relationship with bank tellers?

Does not help that much, especially now-a-days when there just are no new coins to be had.

It's nice to walk into a bank and all the tellers start gathering up what you ask for without even having to say a word. :)

Buy them doughnuts from time to time. I went back to my bank with a few dozen the day after I found $800 face in 40% halves.

It is always a good thing to have to have the tellers on your side. I have taken the tellers who have called me when they have silver lunch and doughnuts before. About once a week I get a phone call from some of my tellers letting me know they have some coins for me waiting. It is really cool to have tellers do some of your roll searching for you.:thumb::high5:

Absolutely!!! Abe's practice of "schmoozing" the tellers is the right approach. I make it a point to let them know I'm a collector and ask them questions about their ethnic background. When seeing them again, I show them an early coin pertaining to their heritage. From there, they willingly set aside coins that they believe are "collectable" or are otherwise interesting.

Earlier in the year, I was rewarded by a teller who set aside a Hobo Nickel. She thought it was a defaced, junk coin and worthless. Since it was "different", she thought I may want to see it. Did I ever!!!

A word of caution, buy whatever they have saved for you and thank them for looking after your interest. Don't turn them off by refusing their thoughtfulness. Their many pairs of eyes are searching a greater array coins than cross my path on any given day. I'm grateful knowing they are on my side and looking.

  12. It is a very good idea to get to know your bank tellers. I have several that my family and I know personally and are friends. Because this thread has only produced positive responses, let me propose a downside that in getting to know a teller (or tellers) you could be broadcasting that you collect coins and potentially increasing your risk of theft. It's a good idea for sure. But, don't be overly pushing with the tellers. Be friendly, come in and do your business and then just ask if they have anything. I can tell you that I was a bank teller for a while and we had one collector who came in looking for things and he was pushy and annoyed the heck out of us. I can tell you he never got a phone call if something good came in.

I'm not being pushy. As soon as I come in they always ask if I'm looking for halves and go back in the vault. They even order a box for me each week. They think it's funny that someone my age collects coins.

How old are you? I'm rather young too and my tellers also find it strange that I collect coins

I am 19 and have an afro and sideburns- they don't think that someone who looks like me should collect coins. They always ask about it. I stop in each Tuesday and friday.

I know a bank teller, and trust me, it has its advantages, big time.

Tell them Coin Collecting is for all ages and a lot of coin dealers started collecting when they were your age.

Same thing happens with me - whenever I ask for halves I say something like "25 rolls please" and they'll either come back with 25 empty rolls or 25 loose half dollars because they don't think I can afford them haha. I'm 15.
