Has anyone pulled a 40% Ike from circulation? The reason I ask is the last time I was at my bank (they know I am a collector) the head teller told me someone had turned in some "big dollar coins". I jumped at the chance to buy them because I have read stories on here about people getting Peace Dollars from banks. None of the Ikes I got were silver. I will probably just spend them since none of them are in that great of shape. If you've found one please reply. I'm also interested in what the chances are of finding them might be.
That's funny... my wife runs a daycare business out of our house, and a few of her customers are bank tellers. Everyone of them calls Ikes (and even Kennedy's) "big coins". So I'll give them $20 (or $40 depending on how many they have) to bring me the "big coins". I've gone through alot of both, and never found a single silver example yet. But they're fun to spend...
My dad found one in about the late 80s. He carried it as a pocket piece for a while and put it away. I have never found one.
I recieved 1 40% Ike in a batch of about 30 that I purchased from the bank near work. That was the first group of IKEs I purchased when I started searching rolls and haven't seen a silver one since.
it's possible and has happened to me twice... Also look for variety's as well... such as the 1972 Type-2...
as a side note: The RedBook says a few 1974-D & 1977-D were minted in the silver clad composition by error. haven't found one .. YET
I've never found a 40% Silver IKE in a circulated batch but I did find the Morgan Below in a roll of IKE's from the bank!
Why is that one Ike 40% is worth more than two 40% Kennedys? Shouldn't they contain the same amount of silver? Apparently not http://www.coinflation.com/coins/1971-1974-1976-Silver-Eisenhower-Ike-Dollar-Value.html
Actually it looks like all of the lower denominations are proportional except for the dollar. Five dimes contains the same amount of silver as one half dollar.
true, it is all proportional except the dollar coin. Then there is the trade dollar which is better than a regular silver dollar ( if genuine).
Anyone have any articles as to why this is/was? Im also curious to know if the to be issued 1964 Peace Dollars would have been over twice as heavy as the 1964 Half Dollar.
The weghts have varied over the years ( but not by a huge amount). Intrinsic value was not meant to be equal to face value, more like have enough silver in it to be worth something reasonable as metal compared to face value. This can fail if prices fluctuate enough to make melting worthwhile...even if illegal. Note the 1853-55 coins with arrows. Of course by about 1965-1970 Silver was too expensive for coining at 40% or 90% standards. Similar to copper cents going zinc in 1982. Nickels were worth a dime ( in metal) a few years ago when copper and nickel were higher. I'd melt them illegally at that price, I'm not much of a Patriot. In fact I'd love to escape from the United States.....
According to the Red Book, the 40% Ike contains .3161oz. of pure silver; the 40% Kennedy contains .14792oz. of pure silver which equates to .29584oz. for two Kennedy's or 6.4% less silver. Chris
