Hi I'm really new to collecting. I'm still learning all the errors and what to look for. The other day I came across a 1985 D penny. What caught my eye was the "L" in liberty is missing because of some type of scratch that follows the rim perfectly. Looking at it closer I saw that the "IBE" doubled. Now I'm not sure if it is double die. Can anyone please help me on this. I really want to learn as much as I can & would appreciate any information. Thanks Angie P.S. Sorry if the picture don't come out right. I had to use my phones camera and use my phone for internet as well. So hopefully they at least show up
Two websites that you will use for Lincoln cents: http://www.lincolncentresource.com and www.coppercoins.com Looks like MD (Machine Doubling) or a form of Die Detoriation MD is http://www.lincolncentresource.com/FAQ/machinedoubling.html Die Detoriation is : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die-deterioration_doubling ; http://coins.about.com/od/coinsglossary/g/deterioration.htm vs DD (Doubled die) http://coins.about.com/od/coinsglossary/g/doubled_die_def.htm
Take a look at the site pages that Shoewrecky provided. Machine doubling and die deterioration (in all it's different manifestations) take a while to learn.
If it looks the same or similar to this one, it is a mix of offset die wear, possible machine doubling, and plating issues. Worth: 1 cent. You'd be better off starting a new thread with pictures of the coin. This thread is nearly 3 years old. Keep up the hunt!
Can anyone help me out, I have the same coin, however, it seems as though the ERTY is in larger font than LIB, is this anything of interest, or am I over thinking this? Thanks!
@Adam Grissman ..You should create your own unique thread. You have an interesting Cent there. Provide a picture of the full Obverse and Reverse for better examination of us members. This is an old thread and won't be looked at as much as a newer thread.
@paddyman98, I have created my own, thano you very much, and have included 3 photographs hopefully clear enough, thank you
I have a 199 missing last number and it’s missing the letter D under the date! What’s wrong with this penny? Are all penny supposed to have the letter D there or no?
Impossible for anyone to tell you without pictures but sounds like a grease filled die or worn/damaged coin. Only coins minted at the Denver mint carry the D mintmark. Cent coins minted at Philadelphia mint carry no mintmark.
Hello . I have the 1985 Pennie with no mint marker and it’s a error print . The putter ridge is uneven. I also have the 1985d miss print we’re the l in liberty is missing . How do I go about selling and or getting them minted . And what’s the best thing to use to clean any of my pennies
@Paul Amaral Pictures? Coins are struck not printed. First you need to figure out if they are actually Mint errors or not. Many minor errors have no or very little premium. 1985 no mint mark Cents were minted at the Philadelphia Mint.. They never used a mint mark on their Cents until last year 2017.. First and only year with a P mint mark
